We're off to Ireland again in June. over from Scottish end to Larne/Belfast. We have a dog and wondering if we'll need an AHC to go south over the border, last time we went we didn't encounter any problems going from north to south. But now the border is in the Irish Sea ??

Anyone know ?

No (we are from Ireland) and you don't require anything either north or south, I've heard that people coming in via Holyhead etc have been asked to show their pet passport be it either European or UK issue both are acceptable but I think these are very isolated incidents but as regards Stranraer to Larne or Belfast you don't require anything
Enjoy your trip 🙂

But are there any checks at the North/South border ?
No, definately not, it's an open border so no check points which was what was wanted by all sides in the the UK's recent change of status

I took the same route to Larne in 2021 without an AHC and found no checks on my dog at all, I got an EU PP at the Animal Hospital in Letterkenny RoI for 30 euro

Ummm just to clarify where you say UK issue, there are no UK issue passports that are valid and while yes, it may be rare to be asked to show valid animal paperwork on a dublin / rosslare crossing it's a hell of a risk.

As I stated I've only heard about it, I've no actual facts and as the OP is travelling to Northern Ireland he'll be fine, as regards UK issue pet passports I'm referring to residents of Northern Ireland who also use that Holyhead route a lot they are still issued with a UK pet passport although I believe they do state UK NI EU on the front covers, but as NI is UK they are still issued by UK authorities to be honest im not really up to date with all the complexities of it all as we're Irish citizens so don't have to deal with all that but I know the OP will be fine coming from North to South and back again which is the main thing on this thread, and I hope that he and all you other potential visitors have a great time here

When you travel from Holyhead, you are crossing from the UK to the EU via a border. From Scotland to Larne it is a UK to UK crossing. Maybe that explains why there have been checks on the Holyhead route.

You will definitely need an ahc or EU PP sailing into Dublin or Rosslare.
Cairnryan to Belfast or Larne is UK to UK so no checks, which is what the OP stated was their route 😀
