Hi

We have booked on a ferry crossing from Holyhead to Dublin at the end of March and we want to make the use of the trip to sort out the passport issue with our two Labradors 🐕🐕‍🦺🐾

We will be travelling from Dublin to the west coast and maybe a bit of the south of Ireland (depending on time etc).

Can anyone recommend a vet please that you have used & that’s are happy to issue an European pet passport?

Both dogs are ok with rabies vaccination, Lilly has 1 years left and Marley 2 years to go until the expiry/renewal date.

Once they have been issued with a passport can we carry on having the rabies vaccination here in the UK or do they have to be done in an EU country to maintain the passport valid ?

Also does the passport have an expiry or renewal date ? What’s required to keep it valid?

Apologies for the multiple questions 😅
just want to make sure we are fully prepared and informed before the trip.

Many thanks in advance 🙂

You shouldn't have any difficulty finding an Irish vet to issue a Pet Passport. Please read the following thread which answers the rest of your questions:

Might be cheaper traveling from a Scottish Port as no AHC required to go to NI and no border checks crossing to the Republic, You may not be challenged at Dublin or Holyhead but technically you will need AHC, I also think that you will have to have new rabies boosters as they will have to be done outside the UK in an EU country. Under no circumstances let an English vet put anything in the passports other than worming treatments Simples!

The Coops is correct, I'm Irish and have been stopped several times coming home via Holyhead, obviously I have an EU pet passport as standard because I live here, so it's never an issue but for British citizens (& pets) I would recommend coming over via Northern Ireland unless of course your happy to buy your AHCs
Also you'll have to get your dogs rabies jabs renewed in Ireland regardless of how long is left on them and you'll also have to have an EU vet issue your boosters on down the line
The passport has no expiry dates we usually run out of spaces before we need to renew but again already being an EU citizen living in the EU is a bit easier for us,
But good luck and enjoy your trip, unfortunately I don't know many vets where your intending to travel as we're from Donegal but either way enjoy your holiday here 😊

According to the Irish government, existing rabies vaccination details can be transferred into a new Pet Passport - from an AHC.

The Scotland ,Northern Ireland ,Eire route is what we took (from Wales!) as it worked out much cheaper with our two dogs than travelling directly from Wales!👍

Good luck with that lol
Legally rabies vaccination details can be transferred across into a new Pet Passport in any EU country. However, many vets seem not to be aware of this. If they are aware of it, many of them manage to do it incorrectly. So unless you know exactly how it should be done yourself, it is 'safer' to obtain a rabies booster at the time the Pet Passport is issued.

This is what we had done but it led to an issue as the rabies date (done in GB) was before the chip reading date entered by the Irish vet.

We ended up going back to Ireland to get her vaccinated again!

Based on where you are planning to go, try Faxbridge Vets in Clonakilty

Yes, 'conflicting date syndrome' is a fairly frequent occurrence in Pet Passports issued on the basis of transferred rabies vaccination details. This is why I highlight this issue in my Tips thread.

That is a very good link - thank you. (y)

Refreshing, too, for a company that specialises in the issuing of AHCs, that they have included the fact that you can use an EU Pet Passport instead of an AHC.

Can anyone recommend any Vets that have been used to issue per passport please ?

Thanks

Our was done by Bluestack Veterinary Clinic ,Donegal town ,Donegal .
Just the first vet we drove passed and called in to ask ,no problem 👍

Vets in Northern Ireland can also issue EU pet passports which is surprising but very handy
NI is still effectively in the EU, as praised by Sunak, lucky them!
