Hi All as anyone used a WiFi only ipad for a Satnav. I know you need a cellular one but wanted to use my phone as hotspot as I have unlimited data and wondered if it worked.
Thanks Patio.

Even though you need a cellular iPad, you don’t need to put a sim init. It is only the cellular that have GPS chip.

Hi Landy I know that but was wanting to use my WiFi ipad as a satnav using my Samsung as hotspot for Internet and hopefully use maps on ipad. I have been reading up on it today but getting conflicting answers and just wondering if anyone as actually done it and it works. 🤔

If using a satnav program like Sygic (what I use) you don’t need any Wi-Fi or data as the maps are on the device. So you could just get a remote GPS sensor. I join my iPad to iPhone using hotspot, or most of the time it’s on the vans miFi.

Thanks I was thinking of
co-pilot. 👍

i use co-pilot on my ipad but you do need GPS if your phone will act as the gps sensor for the ipad then your in. i am not sure if that will be the case though.
can you not try it out before subscribing to co-pilot.

I tried that but it didn’t work properly…….I have just bought a new iPad with cellular and tried it today. No sim or hotspot but it worked perfectly with co-pilot.

I used to use copilot on my ipad through the van mifi but they changed their owners and the whole thing went t1t$ up so ended up using a grunt garmin stick on and still using it 2 years later.

I tried this with a WiFi only iPad using Waze and tethered to my iPhone but I found that the phone does not share its gps with the iPad so it didn’t work. Went for Apple car play instead.

If using the native Apple Maps on an iPhone or iPad it’s worthwhile checking out the data usage as it can be quite heavy. Google Maps apparently uses considerably less but may consume more battery power if not plugged in.

Surely an ipad would have GPS? As long as it does then any maps app should work. Also, I would have thought if it is connected to the wifi of a phone it would pick it's location up from the phone.

We use maps.me on phone and tablet. The maps are downloadable by area so you can download what you are likely to need before you go. Then it does not need any wifi or mobile data but will work totally offline.

Why don't you just try it ?- go out for a drive and see if it works on google maps or download maps.me and try it out.

Simple answer - hope it helps. I use an old iPad Mini for just this purpose - it has no SIM, and I use Co-Pilot. If you are going that route (geddit?) there is a nice console you can get that sits between the instrument binnacle and that clip-board thingy in the centre, and has a standard mounting for a holder for the iPad.

Just been looking for that console, and it seems the market has moved on - there is a specific iPad holder that takes the place of the clipboard.

I use my iPad 11 as a satnav connected to my Samsung phone or my onboard mifi device (H5577) with data and hotspot turned on. it works just as well on either. Nice thing about using the iPad is I can access google maps and plan the route I want to take and not what the satnav device chooses.

another point worth a note is that if the ipad is connected to the internet then co-pilot will add live traffic information on delays etc.

Thank you.

Update I have tried tethering my phone to iPad and used it in my car. It worked but was lagging at times. So after a bit of research I have came up with two options 1 there is a Garmin Glo 2 which is a satellite receiver and works with Bluetooth which can be used basically anything with Bluetooth I have seen it on youtube working with a none cellular iPad and it works well. 2 next option is a Android pad which also as the gps glonass, galileo satellites built in both are around the same price.
so as anyone had experience with either of my suggestions.
Thanks Again Patio.🤔🧐👍

I have been using my iPads with the Garmin Glo for several years. Works fine for me with Copilot and also with Google maps navigation. 👌🏻😀

I would get a secondhand samsung android tablet and use that.

I recently bought a Samsung s6 lite for about £200, 10" screen, and works perfectly with all sat nav software-waze, Road Lords, Google maps, sygic, co pilot etc, also got a keyboard and case, which makes it perfect for passenger to input destinations etc.
