2015 for a year then a break. Now a newbie again!
We were positioned right on the front row of the grid coming from Yarmouth to Lymington. We could look down and see our van from the passenger lounge - so could everyone else, and it wasn't as clean as it might have been. In fact it looked less like a campervan roof than an allotment. A little job for a quiet afternoon on our return I feel.

BUT, a lovely 3-day portion of our trip during which we adopted a donkey! In fact, we could let it graze on our roof.

I live local to Portsmouth and love the island. Only trouble is I can take the Newhaven/Dieppe ferry cheaper than Whitelink or Red Funnel.
that’s crazy..
far too expensive for such a short distance, but then they know they have people by the short and curlies..

You paid for the ferry for just 3 days?
Stayed in The Norton Grange hotel for 3 nights. Ferry was included in a (haggled) package so not too bad. I baulk at paying 1/4 of my council tax on council pensions, but not for having 3 wonderful days within a 3 week adventure. We've taken the decision not to lie in our coffins and say, 'I wish'.

Do You mind if I ask how much?
Thinking of Spain next winter.
We did IOW in June. 10 days, ferry return Lymington to Yarmouth was £150. We got the flexible fare but could have had the non transferable fare for £125.

Didnt know so much of our council tax went on pensions, but I don't understand the link from that to "but not for having 3 wonderful days."

I got a very good deal on the IOW ferry last time I went. Booked in conjunction with the campsite which made a significant difference. As did the fact that the ferry company made an error when they quoted and booked us on (a group of several vans), and when they tried to up the price after we'd paid, our group's trip organiser stood their ground and the ferry company backed down!

My van is parked directly beneath my office window, so it's very easy to see where the birds have pood on the solar panel, and it's also easy to see that the front nearside of the roof (where water tends to drain off due to the slope) is green. Must tidy it up a bit before it goes in to have the pop top replace with a high top next week!

When planning out trip to IOW, did check out packages tied up to several of the popular sites but in the end I booked and got ccc discount for ferry only.
No more than it a wood have cost by booking site at same time.
Then stopped at Dairymans daughter ccc cs at just £7 a day.

You're right, a peculiar link. Just airing my frustration probably, at spending £60 a month on bureaucrats who achieve nowt against my spending a few quid in our twighlight years on something magical that will last. Money on the ferry well spent - without it we would never have met out adoptive donkey. Just hope he's house trained. Joseph, behave yourself!

Hi Jo May, glad you enjoyed the island , me born & bred , lived there 73 years , bit of a bind when you fancy a w/end away in Moho , even with islander concession rates well over the £100
Now live in Cornwall , go back each year to see friends etc .

Why wouldn’t you if it’s what you want to do, like lots on here I won’t see 70 again so I’m not looking for bargains, looking to spend my money on things I enjoy
Yes agree, and I'm also over 70.
Have plenty time on my hands so normally would have more than 3 days.
I spend my money on what I enjoy but like value for money, even if I was flush.
Maybe the OP didn't have time.

A little off subject but coming back from the Isle of Man in a storm our kids were amused by a car on the open car deck at the back with a parrot in a cage.
Later in the crossing our daughter spotted a dog being walked round the deck. We thought she was being silly when she said it had three legs but she was right.

At least a donkey is manageable. The TV keeps encouraging me to adopt an orca. Where am I supposed to keep it? Even with a big ornamental garden pond....

It was both in our case, we have a busy schedule for next week and because we had a fabulous time we got great value for money. In fact, better value that the £60 we paid for a couple of hours visit to Stone Henge.

On our way to IOW, we visited Aylsbury circle. As EH members we got in free. Unfortunately, the house was closed due to flooding so we only got to walk around the gardens and village.
The big circle of stones didnt really interest us.
We ended up with a detour because of road works/closures and ended up going past Stonehenge. Traffic crawled along, can only think it was people slowing down to get a good look.
