I may have occasion to run a LCD TV rated at 45 W via an inverter. Will an ordinary one do or do LCD TV's need pure sine wave?

my lcd tv/dvd works fine on a £50 Halfords bog standard 600w inverter but i suppose tv's can differ by manufacturer.
even though mine's only 40w it seems to draw a lot of battery power on inverter so i bought a voltage stablizer and now run off 12v even on hookup.

 I have been using cheapo (any type) Inverters to power our LCD TV's for the last 7 years with no ill effects.

what wattage have you been using, my LCD TV is only 45w so was thinking of getting a 100 W inverter.

Get a decent inverter, 100w is not good enough. I run a 1000w inverter. Cost me £70 in a sale. 300w would be about right for your LCD. I say, buy the best that you can afford. Perhaps other folk can advice you what is best.
