I currently use a msw inverter and was happy with it untill i was "forced" to buy a new laptop a hp and the trusty old maplin 12v charger wont work (hp uses a 3 pin sense system to ensure you use hp product) i tried a 12v usb c charger but it was having nothing to do with it (or msw) so stuck with getting a sine wave inverter. Highest existing (thought current would confuse somebody) requirement is 260w. A possible extention to use is my MiRider charger (also have a 12V version but 2 bikes) this is my conumdrum, the charger does not state W but 110-240V 2.5A so is that 275W @110V also 275W@ 240W or 600W @240V. I was going to limmit size to 500W if not 300W and only charge bike on 12V. I have no need or want of anything greater than 500W. So 300W or 500W and charge bike (or not). What make other than Victron?

I've just taken my one year old 600w PSW Sunshine Solar inverter out of the van ,as I have upgraded our off grid capabilities a bit and fitted a 1200 w version of the same inverter.
I used it only to charge 2 x Bosch Ebike batteries, which used around 50% of it performance also to run an apple Mac, so it has had very light use and is in perfect condition.
I will list it on the classified section any day now, let me know if you are interested..

Does the new laptop use a USB-C connection? If so then maybe the USB-C charger you used was not powerful enough. Laptop USB-C chargers often have a high power 'PD' mode (Power Delivery), from 30W up to 100W or more. Standard USB-C chargers, even 'high power' ones, won't be up to it.

The laptop has a USB C slot but no PD or lightning symbol. The charger was sold as suitable for usb c power needs. Between them no charge.

What is the power rating of the charger that came with the laptop? If it's not a big power-hungry workstation-type laptop it's unlikely to be more than 100W. In which case it could be powered by something like this:
USB-C chargers use the data pins to communicate with the device they are charging, to find out what voltage they can take. Dumb devices just get the standard 5V, but others can request 9V, 12V or 20V, and with amps of up to 5A. Most USB-C cables can only take 2A or 3A, and you need a properly specced cable to take 5A. I'm not surprised that an old trusty charger can't charge a new laptop.
