We have owned Motorhomes previously for a number of years, then had a break 8 years but only just brought a Elddis Majestic 285 in November so we have planned a trip through France to Spain with our dogs. It's a long time since we last went with a dog and obviously rules have now changed. We know about the health certificate and would like to refresh
on other stuff .... If you could help with ...

Any Advice on:
  1. What food to take for the dogs and where to purchase in France? We are going via Tunnel are they strict on what you can take through? I hadn't realised you can't take it!! How do you manage that!
  2. Which Vets to stop at on the way home we used to go to Chateaux but other suggestions would be helpful.
  3. We have booked a few campsites we would like a nice one in Spain any suggestions?
  4. The route we are taking is through Rouen, Toulouse towards Blanes and hopefully a little further along the coast are there any hold ups etc on the way.
Thanks in advance

Pepe

Like many on here we've been over quite a few times since the B word and our fridge and food cupboards have never been checked on either the tunnel or the Newhaven to Dieppe ferry.

We take as much dog food as we need without issue.

I would consider if you plan to tour Europe more than this trip with your dog. If you do, consider getting an EU passport for your dog. Makes it cheaper and easier in the long run.

Hi
Thanks for the reply

When did you last go and was it via the tunnel

Ive already packed it all but worried they may confiscate it and as we are going for a couple of months and it's a lot to lose.

we did think about this but when I looked you had to be registered as a permanent resident.

We take enough food for dogs with us. They've looked at it at the border umpteen times and never mentioned it. We have bought grain free in Spain on a couple of occasions when we've run out and they have been fine with it. We always use the tunnel.

We have just returned (one week ago). This time, and for the first time using a ferry. But normally we use tunnel, and probably 4ish times a year.

If you go to the “correct” vet then they are more than happy to give you an EU passport for your pet. We did this again, just before we returned this time, as are current French pet passport is nearly out of room, and a rabies booster is soon required. Our dog is now a Belgium boy. 😜😜

We travel with grain free dry food in new sealed bags to cover the first couple of weeks. Have never been checked yet. In theory you can ask your home vet for a letter saying it’s needed for medical reasons. Wide range of dog food is readily available in (mainly out of town pet stores ) around Europe, but check prices as some up-market brands are astronomically priced, as they are here. We have found grain free everywhere from Calais to eastern Slovenia so far.

Definitely get an EU pet passport if you are going even just once a year. It is no more hassle than the necessary vet visit before return anyway. There are a few really useful threads on here, so look at those, but just avoid French vets, as they are now not allowed/encouraged to issue passports to Brits. Once you have the passport they are fine. Our two dogs are also now Belgians!

Check your route through Rouen doesn’t go into LEZ unless you are compliant.

We’re planning first trip to Spain in March also!!

We take enough dry food with us. Never been asked about it using the tunnel. We buy wet food in the small square trays from whichever supermarket we stop at first. Our boy isn't fussy and especially so now he is Belgian 😜

You will need an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) to travel from the UK to the EU.

But if you are planning to travel abroad again, then as said above, get an EU pet passport once you are over there.

Lots of information on both on here, have a good search about.

Try the vet in BUCHY ( Google it) cheap price. Obtain your worm tablets here, on line. Appointments easily booked on line, vets speak good English. There is a basic Aire not far from the vets.
