Hi.... we currently go away in our M/ home and whilst away we have been using our mobile phones ( our phones are on our daughters business account & understandably due to rising costs she has asked us to keep our usage down ) I have to emphasise that we are numpkins when talking internet or technology.
Could someone please in basic language tell us the best way to have internet while in Europe in our van....... we would only use it in Europe.
Thanks for your patience.

hi Steve

depending on what you intend to use it for and what country, if Spain i’d get a local Digi simcard, cheap as chips for €15 unlimited last time so got one

France, get a “Free” one and other countries just get a local sim.

Either use an old phone or router.

I have a Netgear M1 router and unlimited data using a uk ID mobile sim for £11.70 a month which is great for streaming

We are with Tesco on the phones and have no issues accessing the Internet and no charges for phone use in Spain anyway..
We did used to use a mifi with an ee data sim car that was valid for a month. (y)

I have used the phone infrequently, but usually make a call at one of the many coffee shops or McDonalds where wifi is free to catch up every couple of days or so.

We are on Lebara 49p per month for 50GB. You can only use 30GB while roaming though.
It is a special deal but they do have them regularly, keep an eye on the forum 👍

We’re on Lobster in Spain after O2 cut our data off after 62 days and threatened to charge for calls after 90 days.

You may want to search MIFI devices here and Google.

Eg Huawei e5577 is a budget friendly one. A box that you out a simm card in like a phone but it just becomes your data /WiFi point that you log your phones onto like if you were in a pub and linking to their WiFi.

In basic language as the OP requested - Assuming you’re not heavy users of the internet try to get hold of a router (otherwise referred to as a dongle or mifi in other posts). These are available from Amazon - brands like Huawei make good ones. Routers come in all different size and capabilities but a dongle like this will be well under £100 and easy to set up and use

You then need a data sim card for it. You have a choice - a uk network provider (who will limit your data in Europe to around 25gb a month) or if you’re feeling more confident, you can buy a european network sim card when you arrive in your destination country, which will be cheaper and give you much more data
Have a look on your mobile phones - they will record the number of Gb you have used in the past to give you a flavour as to whether 25gb will be enough. On an iphone its in Settings>Mobile Service and scroll down to mobile service

EE have what I think is a decent deal at the moment. I was offered it as an upgrade on my existing contract. It is £46 pcm on a 24-month contract. The first 12-months are half-price and they throw in an extra for free. I took up Netflix (worth £18.99 pcm to us). The plan is unlimited data, calls, texts in the UK. They also throw in Go-Roam at no extra cost which enables you to use all your allowance in Europe and some selected countries. To me it saves faffing about with different SIM's.
Safe and happy travels.

Depends on what (if any) fair use policy they have on EU roaming. I doubt it is unlimited EU data - on unlimited plans do they still have the 50Gb roaming limit ?

I have iD mobile paying £13:50 a month for 250gb. Currently no EU roaming restrictions
Is that a new deal or one you've head for a while? On their home page they have ....

Terms and Conditions

1. 30GB limit if your UK allowance is 30GB or more. Roaming subject to fair usage & open data policies. Roaming comparison versus all UK network offerings for new subscribers across all plans - April 2023.

I spoke with them today. It is unlimited and that also allpies to roaming. They waive the Go-Roam fees on this plan.

This comes up constantly, currently they have waived the fair usage for ip to 63 days:

£15/month for unlimited data, texts and calls with free EU roaming (until the 'offer' runs out - but capped at 30G 'fair use' after that)

Could be a good option for you Two of usI - don't know what your daughter is paying at the moment, but that's a fixed cost so should be easier to budget for.

Unless you're watching a lot of films on the internet then I would expect 30G would be enough for your needs.

The problem with mobile phones is that the providers are all constantly shifting and changing their offers in order to compete with each other so 'the best deal' today may not be 'the best deal' tomorrow.

It did used to be much easier when there was free roaming but it does look like a few providers are creeping back towards offering this.

Been with them for a while but I understand it is for new customers as well until further notice. I’ve used over 100 gb in 9 days and currently in Dunkirk getting speeds of 300mb

Looks good - as long as you can end your contract as soon as they pull the plug and reinstate the 30gb limit.
