I'm a Total Newbie!
I found an app on the app store which measures the amount of amps coming in while charging your phone. It's called Ampere.

I had noticed that using my USB sockets in my living space seemed to charge my phone, but much much more slowly than when driving and plugged into the cigarette lighter socket in the car.

Using the app it showed I was pulling 1.7 amps using the cars cigarette socket with a usb adapter and only 1.01 amps with the usb sockets in the living space.

I then used the cigarette lighter sockets in the back of the van with the adaptor and started pulling 1.7 amps again.

Obviously the USB that came with my mounts are rated quite low. I'm going to look and see if I can find any higher rated USB sockets to charge my gadgets.

It seems, from looking online, that the best way to charge a modern amps hungry phone is to use a cigarette lighter socket with a higher rated adapter. The adaptor I used as rated at 3.1 amps between the two USB holes.

My phone, a Huawei p30, "super charges", in a house 240v plug. As it does this it pulls 4.5 amps. Huawei make a cigarette lighter which claims to be rated to this, so I'm going to buy one for my phone and see how good it is.

Pulling 4 amps inside on 240v mains supercharger charger.

It's good to see the investment in fast charging mains adaptors is paying off.
I'm in the habit of always trickle charging my iPad & iPhone overnight - whether they need it or not, lol
But I like to know where my fast apple charger is (y)

Just downloaded the app.
I have three mains USB chargers for various things.
First one (Huawei) charging at 470ma
Second (Samsung) charging at 1460ma
Third (Sony) charging at 470ma
Unplugged discharging at 470mah

(y) Just downloaded to a few devices and found it's amazing how different chargers are - 12v seem better than 240v which was a surprise.

It's all based on what the plug supplies amps wise, rather than volts. It should say on it what amps it gives. If not it's watts / volts (12 or 240) = amps.

I also tested a much older cigarette lighter adaptor. That was giving me less than 1 amp. It's now in the bin. I bought it before I got my car, so that's like 6 years ago!

Good app thanks - I use magnetic connectors that can be fitted either way around. First way 750ma other way 2.7 amps. Worth £1.09 just for that knowledge alone.

Hi Guys

My Wife has a Samsung phone and she uses a Samsung Adaptive Fast Charger. It plugs into 13amp socket, it has USB outlet, and depending on what sort of device is attached it will output: 5v 2.0amps or for her phone it outputs 9v 1.67amps, which results in a 'very' quick charge.

I have checked and it does exactly that, I test with an inline USB gismo, which shows volts, amps, time and total amperes, they are pennies from China via ebay.

I haven't seen your wife's charger but I hope it's a known make and model.
imo cheap unbranded tech from China that may or may not comply with the applicable standards is too dodgy.

It's not too long ago that I burnt my hand unplugging a USB mains adaptor that was "cheap unbranded tech from China".

It is a genuine Samsung, supplied with the phone.

Yes. You did write that. Sorry.
After reading it was the late “pennies from China on eBay” I remembered…

Not sure if this is relevant? I pumped up all four tyres (and to check pressures) and if I plugged the pump into rear 12v socket (fed from habitation controller) it ran slowly. Plugged into cab 12v it ran twice as fast. Bear in mind my MH and onboard controller is 21 years old.

I guess it depends on the amps rating of the socket and size of wires etc to each socket.

Just tried a similar app on a wireless charger, pretty slow, less than 1A. Wireless chargers are convenient and save wear on the socket but are not very efficient.

Hate to say it but you have a Brit built the wiring to the socket in the hab area will be way undersized, so you will be get to g a volt drop.
No difference in my German van. :giggle:

Nice app just had a play most I clocked from the mains charger was 4.5 amps but phone was 70% charged it dropped to 1 amp at 90%.
Supposed to charge at 6 amp max will have to try it with a flat battery.

There are various fast charging protocols. Things are now standardising on PD, although there are still some proprietary extensions such as QuickCharge. For fast charging, you need phone, charger and cable to be compatible, regardless of brand. PD goes up to 100W, which is done as 5A at 20V. A good compromise for phone charging would be a 30W capable device.

12v Planet is where I get a lot of my gear from. They have higher rated USB sockets in stock.

I do have a new old stock identical controller in the garage. Might switch it on one day and be brave and beef up a couple of the key 12v line wires. (To blown air heater, 12v TV plug socket and my USB charging extension).

Have you got a link please. Just to have a look see?

I forgot my travel adaptor in Italy and bought one from a shop in Pisa. It melted in the socket in the hotel. No joke. Only plugged my old iPhone in it too! 😱

The Huawei supercharger arrived today.

It has two USB ports rated at 4A and 2A.

I tested it with the app and was pulling a max of 3.66 amps with the phone at 46% battery. That was in the 12v cigarette lighter socket in the back of my van.

Sorry, you got a minute? 😜
In the apple App Store there are a couple of apps named ampere & none look the same as yours 🤔
Who is the developer?
Is that an Android app? (I think yes)
TIA
