Reading past posts it appears that insuring a LHD bought from a UK dealer is generally same or similar price to RHD.

However I get the impression it is more difficult if you buy direct from a dealer in Germany - particularly post BREXIT.

I would be grateful for any current information on recent experiences of self importing something like an MLT or Crossover.

(I will be phoning some insurers to ask the question - but would be very glad to know about real life experiences - not of course that I’m worried insurance companies might give inaccurate or incomplete information 🤥 )

Mine is a LHD that was originally registered in Europe and then imported before I bought it. No problem insuring it at all.

So there may be two separate questions: how to insure it once you've bought it, and until it's imported and DVLA registered, and how to insure once that's done. I think the second part is easy.

The first part has, as I expect you've seen, been the subject of threads here and I believe there are people who can help one facilitate the import. I'm sure someone with knowledge of this will be along shortly, but this is what the DVLA has to say:

My LHD is insured via LV. I just swapped cover for the previous Carthago for the Hymer. Cost about £50 extra - so premium is around £550 a year inc Euro recovery.

I asked DVLA to assign my personal plate to it as part of the registration process. I then got a cover note from LV a few weeks before the registration process was finalised for the Hymer on my registration plate. That way it was fully insured and able to be taxed from the moment DVLA assigned the new registration.
