Definitely if you are going abroad. If I die abroad children are told get me cremated over there no need for fuss BUT if I am injured, need medical cover then not capable of making my own way home then I need Insurance.
Depending where you travel, USA for example, I would think it essential as medical treatment is hugely expensive. Travelling in Europe, where your GHIC card may help if you have an accident or possibly emergency treatment. However should you become seriously ill and need to come home, you could be in trouble. Most cover I have looked at will exclude any previously known problems where you have needed medical treatment. Worldwide cover is increasingly expensive for good reason.
I too am over 80 and should one expire overseas your families problems wculd be difficult, to say the least.
Matter of risk management, how risk averse are you? Do you normally avoid non compulsory insurance? Is repatriation beyond your means, then insurance if not your choice.
