New to it
Hi I have bought my first motorhome to pickup at the start of September, it is on a fiat chassi and is brand new, do I require breakdown recovery insurance or is the one which comes with fiat for two years equally as good.i intend traveling in Europe after Xmas in it, so want to make sure I am fully covered, the sales guy is not sure what's included in the fiat assist, I am still waiting for him to get back to me, you would think they would no there product back to front.

Also I have had a couple of qoutes for insurance, but they have come back to me each time and said that I need a thatcham 2 1 alarm system, because of the value of it, it comes with thatcham 2, so I need to get that converted to thatcham 1, I have had a quote from the dealership of £495.00 plus another £150 for two additional sensors for the garage doors, can anyone recommend a good alarm fitter in lancashire, who is likely to be less than the quote from the main agent, who tend to have hirer labour costs, getting excited, can't wait to pick it up.

Fairly certain Fiat Assist is all embracing cover and your good for 2 years. It was 3 with mine when new in 2011 and things may have changed since then so your best bet I.M.O. is email Fiat customer Services and ask them what cover you have and keep a copy of their response. As for the insurance company wanting a better grade of thatcham! Sod that for a game of soldiers, ring round and get other quotes. Plenty of decent insurance companies out there.

Ours is under Fiat Ducato warranty. I think the problem might be if you need the vehicle to be repatriated - Fiat doesn't cover that. We took out an RAC Arrival policy through the Camping and Caravan Club who give extended cover.

Don't mind getting a alarm fitted, as it is for our protection as well, but wondered if anyone has any recommendations for the Lancashire area, usually independents can give a better service and price than large motorhome dealers.

I'd look for a policy that includes breakdown cover such as with Comfort.....................they will also probably insist on a 2.1 alarm and even a tracker depending on value.

Try Rhino installs for upgrading the alarm to a Thatcham approved

Most alarms are ignored and just a noise nuisance. However, if it gives you peace of mind go for it.

Thanks tried ringing Rhino installs today for a price, but they must have been closed.

Think they might be at the Malvern Show in which case you may need to wait until Tuesday.

NFU Chichester don’t insist on an alarm or immobiliser. If you get Caravan & Motorhome Club Red Pennant Insurance it includes getting the vehicle back home if anything goes wrong. Also covers medical as well.

This might sound silly but have you checked whether your new moho is already equipped with a tracker. I recently took delivery of an Autosleeper van and the brochure made no mention of a tracker so I spent ages hunting for (and being turned down for) insurance on that basis. Not until we actually collected the vehicle did the dealer reveal that a tracker was fitted and, furthermore, it covered the first year's subscription.

Thanks old Barrian, I will check today. I still think I want an alarm though as we intend going to Europe and it's nice to know that the perimeter is alarmed when we are sleeping, I see that you can have gas attack alarm fitted as well, do the criminals actually gas the motorhome, or is it an old wife's tail.

Sorry @Novio you've slipped into a vat of popcorn..........................it is generally accepted on here and by the Royal College of Anaesthetists that it is not possible and an old wives tale.................like a successful Brexit...............................stop it ....................let it go !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We got our breakdown insurance through our motorhome insurer and it included full European cover including repatriation. From memory it was an addition £70 or so.

The best alarm specifically for a motorhome is supplied and fitted by Vanbitz, who is a member of this forum @eddievanbitz. Even though they are based in Somerset lots of forum members travel from all over the UK to get it fitted. We got the Growler and also an additional immobiliser which rings our phones if the alarm is triggered and can also track the motorhome. Not cheap, but well worth the peace of mind.

That is definitely the case. They also only cover the vehicle, so if you tow a trailer it is not covered. We currently have Iveco Customer Care Cover but also have an Arrival European Policy through the CCC if memory serves me correctly it was about 150GBP for the year.

For a new van most companies will insist on an alarm....................I like it most at night when we are in the van rather than when we go out. https://www.rhinoinstalls.co.uk/
With regard to Insurer requirements, I have found they are more interested in trackers than alarms. Best get a few quotes and see what requirements they have before you start looking at having anything fitted.
