Ineos Grenadier, what do we think of it

Some talk of Alexander, and some of Hercules
Of Hector and Lysander, and such great names as these.
But of all the world's great heroes, there's none that can compare.
With a tow, row, row, row, row, row, to the French built Grenadiers.

Doesn't quite work, does it.

I don't get the appeal. People complained that the new Defender wasn't any good because it was too comfortable, too expensive, relied too much on technology and was too hard to fix... this is the same, no?

Just trying to get an idea on price but all I'm finding is guesses of a starting price of between 35k and 50k

When did cars get so expensive , is it to stop normal people buying them

It's 25k or £999 deposit and 35x £299 a month

Having learned to drive in a Landy, and owned several Landies over the years I'd be interested in a side by side comparison.

The bottom line is can it be made to go again with only a plumbers adjustable pipe wrench after being recovered from the bottom of a lake ?

Oh yes, and the cost and global availability of spares

It uses a modern BMW engine... I think that answers that question.

Indicative starting cost of £45k

45k is nuts.

Bet you didnt notice the little red machine gun button
The button has a diagram of a bicycle with the word "TOOT". It operates a muted horn to politely signify your presence to cyclists who might not have heard your approach.

I know, can pretend pre flight checks
Hi.
Do you think its going to be a bit quicker than the two diesel SWB mk 3's i had then ?. :ROFLMAO: 🚛🚛🚛🚛🚛(y)

I have owned landrovers since 1967 , some times several at the same time , every model except 88 lightweight . I owned my last one a 1986 110CW V8 from 87 . I changed the engine from V8 petrol to BMW 3ltr Turbo Diesel with Rallyraid ECU about 6 years ago . It had triple difflocks and suspension mods . It was quite a simple change using 99% standard JLR or BMW parts. From my experience of the BMW and its performance , In my 110 I would say Ineos is on to a winner . Its more of a defender replacement by miles than the Discovery with a funny body on , which is built in Slovakia , shame its all foreign content :(

I agree with Jeremy Clarkson, the New Lanny is a great car, but spec'd up it costs the same as the RR so why would you buy one?

I think the Inneos and Land Rover models will be roughly the same complexity. No, you can't pop the body off the frame on the Defender anymore because it's a monocoque, but that's about the only difference. And I bet the Inneos will be well beyond the capability of the average shed 'n' spanners enthusiast. They are both full to the gills with sensors and electronics for safety, emissions, and to improve performance on and off-road. They are both fully integrated designs that won't be like the swap-shop designs of old. Just the Inneos has a look that's closer to the Defender of old.

Is the Inneos any different though?

Be interested to see the price, I assume they'll also include a 90 version in the line up.

No concern that it is not British built, despite the "patriot" Jim Ratcliffe being the head honcho? To my mind there is something wrong with trading on a great British name whilst putting your money where another country's mouth is. I know that parts etc will come from all over but there's no excuse in my mind for not making the final assembly in this country as was originally planned. Still, if you live in Monaco (to save the odd £4 billion in tax), what do you care?

At the risk of putting my head out of the trench and into the firing line,,,,,,,,I lost count of the number of times my Isuzu Trooper had to drag landrovers out of the mire! Had series one, two, three, lightweight and Discoveries and not a patch on the Isuzu off road,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and duck!

it was nice knowing you 👀😇

I had a defender 90, TD5 great off road , I joined the Highland 4 wheel drive club.
I broke a half shift on rear axle dropping off a sheep pit onto a boulder. I swapped the half shaft t in about 20 minutes and was away again. They are most easy to repair, I bent a steering rod, got a 4lb hammer and straightened it out all on side of a hill or in a field. I had to sell it though as wife didn't like it.
Would the new defender be easy to fix or look better with some Tesco kisses on it ? Doubt it, but yes I would have a Grenadier

Finally seen one in the flesh at the CV show albeit still a prototype (mainly the dash and switches).

I like the look of it and it appears to be very solid.

I placed a returnable deposit when they were first announced but its taken so long to arrive took delivery of a Defender 110 in the interim. Its very very comfortable both in town and on motorway and consumption slowly getting better. It was high 20s in the first few weeks and now getting about 32 after 3000ish miles. It is certainly as comfortable and quiet as a quality saloon and handles very well.

Will I buy the Grenadier and ditch the Defender, not sure yet but if I can convince myself they will be in demand and selling at a premium may still order one and sell one or the other once I've driven the Grenadier.

Incidentally I queried lead time and was quoted October/November delivery based on the time of my initial deposit.

Test ride (not drive) booked for next month but still in the prototypes which is putting me off a little, placing an order on something I can't see in the flesh?

Don't get it - sorry. Used loads of Land Rovers in anger as a tool on road construction sites and they were very capable, but on the road they were just horrible places to be. This Ineos looks to be the same thing with bling inside. My current ancient Freelander 2 is great on the road and would get far enough out of the grassy field for 99.999% of use.

Just watched a 45min test on it in Australia, a chap called Piare? White. He rates it. Starts at £52K evidently

BMW dirty bit's. Is that for the better...........i think so.

I would have bought a British one, but a french built Landrover! Nah, I'll stick with my British/Indian one thanks. :D

Oops just realised that this is an old thread and I'm repeating myself. :D

One of the design specifications was that you can hose it down inside - including the dash.

No need to have that spec in a Brit built Lanny. In every Defender/110 I've owned in the last 40 years; both footwells have leaked like buggary so the interior is always getting a nice wash/hose down.
