I personally don't think its worth the paper its scribbled on. I did it a couple of times in the early days but asvlong as your licence is in a common language nobody really cares. We rented a car in Turkey last November on a UK licence without any issues.
The only place we've been where a uk licence wasnt enough was Sri Lanka , where the hire company helped me to get a Sri Lanka licence. Ironic really when the locals standard of driving is abyssmal.
