Downsized to Bongo!
Exp
Since 2012
I sold the Bongo on 28th Feb, so I did a SORN so I wouldn't have to pay the March VED by DD.
The money was transferred yesterday, and I notified DVLA of the sale. I have the email confirmation.
The new owner arranged to collect today, and booked the train from Lymington.
He just rang me. The system is locked until next week or when he gets the new V5!
He rang the DVLA who informed him there was nothing he could do about it! Something to do with SORN time windows.
He's not happy. and neither am I. I suggested he goes to a Post Office with the green slip but apparently that avenue is locked as well.
GRRRR

Makes no odds he can just drive it without tax and when he taxes it next week he'll be paying from the first of the month anyway. Its dvla problem not his.

Police have no interest in untaxed vehicles and dvla can't prosecute for their mistake.

Actually the police regularly stop untaxed vehicles, and nowadays they also seize them. So if the Bongo's new owner takes the risk and gets stopped (which I guess is probably low risk, but still a risk), he will be fined and get points for driving an untaxed vehicle, and will also have to pay the impound charges. Not a risk I would be taking, especially with the unmarked roads policing vehicles on the M27 and surrounding areas.

He won't.

I've been stopped several times in an untaxed vehicle.. the police have always stated that its down to dvla to deal with it.

And that was without proof from dvla that they have an issue.

You don't get points for an untaxed vehicle either or I'd have been disqualified years ago.

If the vehicle had been untaxed for months and used frequently on the roads it might be a different story .

But change of owner , first week of a month he will have to pay for anyway and proof that it's a dvla issue I guarantee he will face no consequences whatsoever

It's because you sorned it, rather than notify of a change in owner.

Once a vehicle has been sorned, it then can not be taxed until after a certain period of time, it would have told you if you did this online

I certainly wouldn’t drive an untaxed vehicle in our area. Police will give you a ticket and there are also regular anpr checks on main route by dvla.

I think the minimum SORN period is 5 days. I assume it's just to reduce the risk of the status of the vehicle being confused.

5days If I remember correctly, had it happen several times

Bought a van that had been Sorn’d two days previously, took the green slip to the PO and taxed it there, no problem
