You’re like me, don’t like to give up!!

How about buying a new one and keeping your current PC for your amateur radio stuff? Not being computer literate have no idea if that is a feasible option?
That is what I am trying to do :) I have new machines but really need this older one working on XP :)

Oops, sorry, told you I wasn’t computer literate! Worked at a college, after every summer holiday IT would swan in and say they’d installed new software packages and watch the panic on our faces. We were expected to learn these quickly on the hoof to produce classwork material for the teachers for the first week. Quite enjoyed the challenge.

Once bought a Leo computer at auction years ago and was told there was nothing on it. Played around a bit and found there was a very old word processing package, learnt a few bits using Dos, good fun.

Hope you solve your problem quickly.

DNS servers not responding by the sounds of it.
It did cross my mind, but why would redoing the IP config make it work ( briefly )
As soon as I get a moment I am gonna try Opera as a portable app and see what happens :)

  • Open your Command Prompt from the Start menu (or type “Cmd” into the search in your Windows task bar).
  • Next, type ipconfig/all into your command prompt and press Enter.
  • Look for the field labeled “DNS Servers.” The first address is the primary DNS server, and the next address is the secondary DNS server.

II tried that and I THINK it will only show up if I switch over to hard wire ( which is a pain ! )

Try it on both.

I am trying to find out if your DHCP server is giving you DNS server IP address or not.
Handy to rule out if it is one interface or both.
If one then you know it is likely that the fault is with that interface or with the device you are connecting to.
If it is both, then you know it is a problem in the networking config for windows.

Maybe unrelated but on the Windows Server newbuilds I had to work with, the internet browser was locked down and unusable due to security settings.

If that sounds related I'll look into what fixes I had to do - basically just getting to lower security settings.
What is the error message , if any, in the browser window you get instead of the desired web page?

I think running a browser as a portable app (as suggested by RetiredPope ) could help diagnosis too

Could be drivers, do you have laptop/motherboard cd that may have the drivers needed even if slightly out of date, most later installs either have basic drivers to get you going or download them in the back ground during setup,
Did you try formatting in BIOS

Well that eliminated an awful lot and brought up something else

Using Opera portable I have access to all the internet, but by gum it is not so much slow as errrr... a really really slow thing going on a go slow !
About 5 to 8 minutes to load a page

Sooo,,, that means that all the important bits are working ( DHCP etc ) and the issue is def with the web browser ( Internet Explorer )

Good progress people !!

I shall try Firefox next and see how that behaves

Sounds like my new build findings.
The Security Settings are set to "high" for Internet Explorer. i.e. too high to be usable. =
Even if you move to Firefox or Chrome, etc. it might be worth fixing IE first.

Already set to the lowest possible....
But I did double check, and as I did so a web page popped up !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have no idea how or why, but it seems that using Opera ( as slow and painful as it was ) caused whatever the issue was to simply go away ?

With Explorer working I immediately downloaded Chrome and I am happy to report everything is now working
OK, as expected not the fastest thing in the world but yes, it all bumbles along quite nicely

Massive thanks to all who gave suggestions and help ( too many to name ! )
I was going to give it to a local school once up and running but over the past couple of fraught days I realised that I really need the machine for some old programs I used to use and will be able to use again

Again, thank you one and all for bearing with me

Ya all take a bow and can have the rest of the day off :)

You're obviously sorted now , but get ready for next problem by getting yourself a bootable copy of puppy linux nice easy to use . Recently had to use it to sort out win 10 that got its nickers in z twist, a format later and reinstall and good to go. Versions of Puppy suitable for ancient slow machine

You can create Windows 10 recovery USB sticks. Links on Microsoft support site.
They can be used to recover MBR errors etc.

The problem was.. There are no vid driver available for win10 and when I went back to win7 I started getting web issues
This has now been sorted out but I am trying to sort out a method to stop it happening if I ever get the same or similar issue :)

Sorry. Yes, it was someone else that recently mentioned Win10. I do (now) recall the Windows OS downgrade saga in post 1 🤪👍
