Ile De Re is wonderful, plenty of campsites and Aires. We stayed at Camping Huttopia Ars-en-Ré (others nearby were full). It's a great site, an easy walk into Ars-en-Ré and an easy cycle to lovely Saint Martin and the rest of the island.

We liked the location of Au lever du soleil St Saint Martin and their "Jacks Beer" is nice. We had a good lunch at tout-du-cru.

There is a toll to pay to get onto the island (unless on foot or pushbike).

We've no experience of La Rochelle.

Isle de Rey is well worth a visit especially if you have bikes. Lots of bike tracks.

We spent a couple of days on a campsite on the south east end of the Island a few years ago, but have forget its name. Not very good so we moved to the south west end of the Island to meet up with other funsters ( dabhand and ShiftZZ ) at Camping ESSI, just outside of Ars-en-Re. Much better campsite and ACSI rates were reasonable.

As usual the funsters had already found a really nice Beach bar within walking distance with beautiful views. So we enjoyed some good meals with them all while watching the sunset over the Ocean.

We can also recommend a trip to St Martin-de-Re with its beautiful harbour with loads of places to eat, and also to the lighthouse at the western tip of the Island.

La Rochelle is well worth a visit, especially the Old Port. We stayed at the large Aire (€15 per night) and caught the bus into the centre.

Quite a long time ago we stayed on the Municipal campsite at St Martin de Re for a few nights. Quite adequate facilities, and a very short walk into the centre. The grass pitches are quite small so it is probably more suitable for campervans and tents rather than large MHs. I think there was an Aire by the entrance.

The other thing I remember was that the Prison officers were on strike (the island has a large jail) and trying to picket/blockade the toll bridge to the mainland.

We went and looked at the Aire, but the parking areas were shaded with Horse Chestnut trees and it was early autumn. So you can guess what was happening. Spoke to somebody who was staying there and he confirmed the regular thumps on the motorhome roof kept them awake.

I stayed at the municipal site at St. Martin, no issues fitting my 8.2 mtr motorhome in, there are big and small pitches, it's handy site being walking distance to the harbour and fairly central on the island. There is also an aire next door.

We have stayed twice at la Flotte… lovely place the campsite was flower camping bel air.. just a short walk into the town, plenty of restaurants, loads of sea food… wonderful
the campsite was OK would not say it was up to normal “flower campsite“ standards and the two times we were there I think their lawn mower was broken because the grass on the pitches was knee height

Was there a 3.5 tonne weight limit on the access to the site? I seem to remember La Flotte town having a 3.5 tonne weight limit.

We stayed at the aire at St. Martin 2 years ago. Well located, but popular and very tight for space.

If you intend to eat or drink out your wallet will take a beating. Very expensive, even by French standards. Beautiful area though and great cycling routes.

We've visited Ile de Re many times over the last 20 odd years but not as yet with the motorhome, however we stay in La Rochelle several times a year as we used to have a house in this area as it very much feels like home.

La Rochelle is well worth visit - a west coast chill town.

The municipal aire in LR is OK and has great access to the cycle route network which is first class in, around the town and along the coastal paths.

The campsite in the centre of town is grotty but in a great location, but our best stopover is in the large carpark nearest to the beach at the Marina in Les Minimes. Note - currently closed for a few weeks due to a big Expo taking place in the site.

If you like the classic Moule and Frites dish try Moule Brothers at Marsilly. There are at least three free aires parking spots (no services) along that bit of coast with great views back towards the Ile de Re and a fabulous gravel track coastal cycle path back to La Rochelle.

Whilst you are in the area, Ile de Madame, Aix and Oleron are all worth a visit.

I'm guessing you are a fellow MTBiker, if you are in Dept 17 on a Sunday morning there will always be a VTT, Velo Tout Terrain Rando event going on somewhere in one of the local villages. They don't really have much in the way of hills in 17 but there is a big cross country MTB scene. Think, tight wooded tracks with wide open gravel tracks say similar to riding Cannock, Delemere, Forest of Dean etc.

I've just turned up done many a Rando on a Sunday morning in Dept17. You complete a entry form, pay about 5 Euro for the event kitty, select a route from the map then off you go following the pack and the route markers.... at some point some 80 year guy on an ancient Decathlon budget special, mountain bike will storm pass you like you are standing still....

The entry fee includes refreshments. Most of the Randos have a theme, one year I did the Rando d'Huitre - at the halfway rest point the refreshments were wine and oysters, another was the Rando Marrons chauds et vin nouveau, Hot chestnuts and new wine, to celebrate the first pressing of the year's grape harvest, much wine followed at the halfway and end points....

In fact - here's a link to this year calendar of events. It's a big scene, if you do a few events you will start to recognise some of the other riders from previous routes.

Just turn up in the village hosting the event sometime after 7am on the date and sign up! They will often have a village walk event going on at the same time.

Couple of pics for ya !

Just stayed at Les Ilates near Lois on the island. I know it’s not helpful, as it’s about to close for the winter, but can recommend the island, great for cycling. Go to a tourist info hub, and get a map of all the cycle ways. Plenty of great eateries and local markets, although most close around 13:30-14:00. Plenty of routes, but not many hills 😊.

Can highly recommend Camping L’Ocean which has everything you could wish for. Sandy beach just across the road, a lovely pool, well-stocked shop, bar, restaurant and decently sized pitches. We are not usually into large sites but couldn’t fault this one. Direct access onto one of the many cycle trails. It appears in the ACSI book and earlier this year we paid €24.30 per night including local tax, with our 7th night free. Just loved the Ile de Ré
