Newbie!
HI me again, another trip another sim issue!

We are due to start our trip down to Spain on Monday. After lots of research and previous issues on last trip with RWG I decided to opt for Tesco unlimited data. I made sure people that recomended them had got them working in a mobile router but unfortunately I seem to be having issues. It didnt work initially when it arrived but after a couple of calls with them we got it going and I thought it was all ok. However it seems when it goes in to sleep mode, when it wakes up it stops working. It wants to switch to O2. If I change the settings manually from O2 to Tesco, that does not work either, however if I take it out of the router, put it in my phone and then back in router it starts working again! This unit is driving me mad! I am tempted to take an old phone and just hotspot off it as I know it works in phone ok and then buy a sim in Spain but Tesco will let me cancel at mo as I am within 14 days so I could do that but then we will have nothing for the drive down and I will need to work. I cannot buy either of the others on my shortlist ie Poppit or IQgo as it will not arrive in post in time now.

Has anyone else had these issues?

Not had that issue but on our last trip I found two different phone sim's incredibly slow in my Mifi, 6 to 12mb/s in Mifi (with MIMO aerial), 35 to 95mb/s in phone. Networks must be restricting them in the Mifi.

Is you Huawei a Mifi or Router, as there is no obligation for a phone sim to work in a Router.

Currently in Spain with FiLs Huawei router which he asked us to see if it works because it didn't last year for him.

He has a smarty Sim card and downloaded a couple of films whilst in the UK so it wouldn't infringe their policy.

We have tried it at different spots and it just doesn't want get internet.

If weather holds this afternoon we should be going to a town and I LL be looking for a European 100 GB Sim and see if it works so will update you.

Thanks for the reminder, I forgot we have an old phone in the van and I LL try the Sim in there (too big for our phones)

Tesco specifically do not support their sims in routers. I couldn't get mine to work properly in a Huawei device and gave up, getting refund in the 14 days.

We are in France at our cottage, using a Huawei mi-fi with a IQ mobile sim (data only) its hanging in the upstairs window permanently on charge. Stream and use Amazon Firestick fine also use the same router in the van no problems. £20 per year for the card and £20 for 100 gb lasts 30 days. Have you tried enabling it via your ipad 192.168.8.8 or 192.168.1.1 user name and password lowercase admin. If it does not recognise the password try resetting the router.

The problem is one that I mention regularly. Phone SIMs are not data SIMs. The mobile operator's know that you’re trying to use a phone sim in a router and restrict or deny service.

The answer is to get a mobile data sim like the one that Tiekom offer.

My Tesco mobile Unlimited SIM has been working faultlessly in my Huawei MIFI router for the last 2 years in UK and EU. Even retained the unlimited EU roaming

Ah but when inside my PVC the Faraday cage effect makes data reception on a phone poor, do I need the roof aerial and mifi router.
I wouldn't be without one often in remote mountian areas no signal on phones but can pull in a 3G on Mifi.

I had same issue . You need to ensure the APN is assigned correctly to tesco

It's a mifi, had it installed by the dealer when we bought our van. Was supposed to make working on the road easier but it seems to have been a big waste of money so far :(

I do but when it goes into sleep mode it stops working and then when i wake it up it seems to keep switching back to o2.. tesco said I'd be better to go with 02 sim instead!

I've never had any problems until last years obviously the networks are throttling the speed when a phone sim is in a Mifi or router.
The solution is fairly easy just buy a data sim.

Yes I am having to do that each time it exits sleep mode but it makes no difference. Its only when I put it I'm my phone, it must change it to tesco and then it will work until it goes into sleep again! I wish I had gone for IQ mobile, I had it all ready order and read a review of someone not having any luck with it in Spain so I decided against it. Too late to get replacement now :(

Yes but not much choice on data sims. I went with RWG because they are data only and had issues. In hindsight I should have gone with poppit but I read too many mixed reviews!

Thats good to hear. It seems to work fine in my phone just not my mifi. I will bring old phone and hotspot it I think.

What sim are you using? I have just cancelled Tesco's so am now simless...will buy one when we get to Spain and just use phones on way down. I have still got my RWG global sim that I assume I could probably buy a top up for and reactivate as its less than 12 months old, but I am very reluctant to go back, but it might see us through France at least and until I find a Spanish one...assuming it works! I have emailed them to check and see how long their replies take these days lol!

Me too, we have a Huawei MIFI and haven’t been impressed. We just use our Tesco data allowance and too up as needed. Works fine.

We might try a proper data sim this year, as I understand a MIFI is faster?

Try going back into the mi fi from your Ipad or whatever you are using do the 192.168 etc, go into statistics I think and where the selection of networks is automatic cancel that and select the one that shows when the SIM card is in the phone

Just had great fun.
I have a spare phone but we haven't got a pin to open any phone.
Ripped the van to pieces and found this.

So I used the pin on the back and got the smarty Sim into the old phone and via a phone call on the other phone to FiL he gave me the details to put in on that screen and we got internet on that phone.
Put it back in Huawei thing and no internet so presume I have to connect Huawei thingy to laptop then put in the same figures and numbers which will be a job for tomorrow.

At least we know smarty Sim works
