My wife and I are looking to buy our first Motor Home. Not quite retired but the kids have left the roost. Through the last 35 years we’ve transitioned from tent to frame tent, trailer tent and caravan. Now looking for an engine. We’re looking for a van we can both work from home in with desk space for two laptops. We both enjoy water sports so garage space for inflatable paddle boards and SCUBA equipment is essential.

We’re looking for tips for how to start before we go to the Motorhome show in a few weeks time.

Thanks

Hi and welcome to FUN. (y) Try to sit in as many Motorhomes as you can, then imagine it’s a rainy day. Is there enough room, do you feel comfortable. Another thing is don’t believe manufacturers on their payload weights, always try to check yourselves usually by visiting a weight bridge.

The most important factor is layout, followed closely by layout and then make sure the layout is suitable. Most of the other stuff can be added or changed (budget permitting)

Welcome to the Fun House

Wife wanted a fixed bed but it soon became apparent a 4' 6 bed with a bathroom wall on one side was too claustrophobic. So I now have the fixed bed and make up the 2 settees for my wife.Outcome bliss!!!!!!!!
There is no ideal configuration as all vans would look the same.We like 2 settees not dinettes

Go to the show in Birmingham. You’ve missed the biggest, Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf at end of August. When we were changing out motorhomes we always went to the Salon (we did live about 3 hours away) having said that B’ham is good. Just go and sit in as many vans as you can. Maybe even take your laptops so you can try out the tables.

Read Jim's brilliant article above 👆
Go to the Motorhome show and look and sit in as many vans as possible that fit your brief, to get a short list of the ones you think might work for you and then if possible hire one of those models for a weekend or longer, to see if the layout really works for you.
The reality of actually using and living in the motorhome, can be different to what you think when you are just viewing and it is easy to get carried away with the excitement when you are viewing.
Ask any questions on here and you will get lots of answers.
Most importantly, enjoy the research and enjoy your motorhome when you find the one for you.
