How the Finns become the Worlds best rally drivers?

What a stupid comment to make as it has no relevance unless you were describing yourself in which case omit the skilful.

Not nice.

It was “interesting” seeing how the drivability changed after the contact. I don’t fancy being a navigator with normal pressure of calling instructions but knowing the driver is still trying flat out with a poor handling car - nope - I’d say 0k now ?

if they were doing it in a public place then I would agree but can't see what harm they were doing there and really interesting project IMO
The section at 02:33 - 03:12 was likely rural roads for Scandinavia.

On holiday in Cyprus one year unbeknown to me a leg of the World rally championship was taking place on the Island. The first I knew of it was when I was driving a large Toyota 4x4 heading for the top of Mount Olympus on the old road. We had noticed a lot of noise from below us and a number of helicopters flying up and down the valley. All of a sudden these rally cars started passing us the din and dust was incredible. I though sod this they are not getting away with that but alas they had the legs on me.
We started to come across signs for the rally and parked up where they were doing a time trial. We had the best possible seat on a log right next to the road on a bend and about 500 yds from the start. Those drivers and cars are something else it frightened the life out of me. Coming past us with a sheer drop sideways doing what must have been 100mph.
The next day we went down to the beach area early where they had there overnight stop. Got to meet the world champion but cant remember his name for the life of me. Had a good look around the cars and chat with the support teams. If it had been here we wouldn't have got anywhere near them. We met up with them again in different towns along the coast. It was an awesome impromptu experience. To say rally drivers are insane I think is an understatement.

Wheelspin and weight would be my first concern and the other he was hitting the Rev limiter a lot But I must admit I would love a chance at hurting myself on it ???

It looked like a bunch of lads having fun with a project rather than any exceptionally skillful riding. Finns are exceptional drivers (in general) because their training and test include car control. A lot of Finnish roads are unsurfaced.

Having never met you,and maybe don't want to, I'd rather you kept uninformed, personal remarks to yourself. For all you know I may be a competent motor cross rider ( which I am not) so please speak from an informed basis.

Its quite all right for you to call a bunch of guys you have no knowledge of Dickheads though?

After the first few minutes it was a bit boring, great fun for the rider I suppose, nothing to do with the skill required for a good rally driver though.

If you haven't got anything good to say why piss off others with childish comments like this?
Come on girls grow up. I love the sound of tortured ICE engines of every sort but most of those who don't would share DiggerJon s sentiments.?

Whats that navigator all about? Flat Left 50 "maybe", flat right 200 "maybe" well does he know the road or doesn't he?:xgrin:
Never heard "maybe" used before, it would not give me any confidence, imagine if the misses says to you in the van, next left "maybe" then first right "maybe" would you trust her?:xlaugh:

The fact you cant spell Moto Cross probably means you didn't have to say you weren't LOL

Another occasion I went to Wembley stadium for what I remember to be the start of the round the world car rally. I remember the host saying as they left the stadium at a rate of knots that these drivers can drive on solid ice down hill on a bendy mounting road at high speed. That sounded pretty impressive to me.

Perhaps he looked up for a second then lost his place on the course plan..cant be easy at speed without looking at the road :xsmile:

Just giving it some thought, The world rally champion who had trouble passing me on a mountain road in Cyprus was the Scot Colin McRae as I remember he was driving a Ford Focus. I had to let him pass in the end as I was hitting my rev limiter but it was a close race....;):xsmile:

Didn't find "maybe" explained yet but this is interesting: Rally navigator languages

My wife had a close encounter with Colin McCrae. It was her first experience of a rally stage (Penmachno I think)and she was standing on the course because it was all quiet, I warned her and she took no notice. She's never moved so fast before or since when Colin's Subaru came around the corner.

btw when he was winning he was 'British'.

Derived from a pistonheads discussion of the same video: -
'Maybe' - Depends how much speed you're carrying from the previous corner and how good your line is... if your exit was good it's flat, if your exit was poor it might be flat if you're line is perfect, but best have a little lift otherwise.
EDIT: Oh!! I quoted from the discussion but lost the earlier mention of "what does "maybe" mean
EDIT OF EDIT!! beep x 3 & now I mucked up the partial quote. I'm off...

Sad bit of news I've just read that Colin McCrae was killed in a helicopter crash in 2007
