Firstly I must point out I know nothing about data etc.
My question, my android phone is connected to U Connect (2022 Fiat Ducato)
When I turn U connect on I get a Google(?) map on the 7 inch screen, showing vehicle and where I am.
It seems to do this automatically and presumably is running all the while if phone is switched on in the motorhome.
I guess I could use this as the sat nav ( told you I knew nothing)
How much data is this taking off my phone? I have popit with their monthly allowance.
I have a Garmin Sat Nav which I use.
To prevent the U connect using phone data do I need to turn my phone off?
How much data is U Connect using? If it is hardly anything I can simply leave it on.
Should I turn the phone off to conserve my data?
I piggy back off my phone to my iPad to access the internet and don’t want to waste the data allowance.
Be gentle and explain as you would to a 5 year old, I might comprehend then!

I cannot help but I am looking forward to the answers. I have a 4 year old Fiat car and a brand new Fiat van and the new van has left me mystified. I have turned off Siri and Bluetooth as I don’t want it to connect as I want to use Google maps on my phone and the bloody phone maps still won’t show. I still just get written directions. I can’t get rid of CarPlay.

The huge Satnav looks pretty but I’m not very confident it knows what it’s doing. It hasn’t earnt the moniker Jayne yet.

The U Connect system as such does not use any data from your mobile SIM tariff. The WiFi connection (plus Bluetooth) to your phone is just a method of communication between the phone and the U Connect head unit.

If you then choose to open an app on your phone for navigation, music, etc. for use on your U Connect head unit, then you will use data the same as if the apps were just used on the phone.

Media, off line maps, etc. already stored on your phone would not use tariff data; e.g. Playing music already stored on your phone would not use any SIM data.

Not sure I’ll explain this correctly but my 2022 Uconnect has no sat nav so would need to use Apple CarPlay and link via Bluetooth to the iPhone. I have used it but generally don’t, preferring to use a stand alone Tom Tom.

But here goes from memory. The phone is paired to the Uconnect all the time. I go onto the Uconnect settings, possibly the phone settings, and enable car play. I then select on the phone I think to enable car play and enable Siri and then they both talk to each other. I then think I go on Uconnect I select Apps and select the phone screen and it appears and I choose the Tom Tom app. Possibly though it appears automatically on the Uconnect when it is connected via car play.

Generally I have the car play disabled and Siri off and whilst I get the phone calls on the Uconnect I don’t use any data at all.

Depending upon your Garmin sat nav model if you use the Garmin Drive app for traffic data it consumes around 2Mb data / hour.

Wonder if UConnect might be similar?
