Was having a conversation with a dealer where I bought my new to me PVC.

I was thinking about having a couple of jobs done on the van. So I asked how much , he stated the hourly rate was ********* plus cost of any parts fitted.

£120 per hour. So I decided not to have anything done and will look elsewhere. How much do you get charged an hour at your local dealers?

Get the jobs done by independent specialists. Usually much cheaper, better experience, and they often come to you. Have given up with dealer workshops.

I have already arranged for my local mobile technician and he has quoted half the price of my local dealer.

Take mine to a garage I have used for the last ten years. Hourly rate is £60.

Sounds reasonable to me. My man charged £60 which I find reasonable.
As above travelling expenses, training, renewing certs etc. It all adds up

I'm fortunate enough to have 2 x mobile HGV Mechanics come to ours with all the gear, and do what's needed for £50pph (or part thereof). I obviously pay for the parts, which they can often source much easier than I can. 🤷‍♂️ A great service, and they are very good at what they do. (y)

Just had an annual gas boiler service, (in keeping with the terms of the warranty), and a flush pipe replaced from the cistern to the toilet bowl. £94.00 all in, including the pipe. (y)

Jock. :)

when you consider that includes travelling time and fuel etc to your home I dont think that that, is excessive.

It’s not £168 per hour. You haven’t allowed for travel time between jobs. The £84 is not pure profit. What about vehicle costs (depreciation, fuel, tax, insurance, maintenance), NI, tax, pension, training, maintenance of equipment, indemnity insurance, professional fees to be registered, accountant, time spent doing admin, estimating jobs, holiday time, sickness, etc.

but its not £168 per hour,
The travelling time is probably 30 minutes ( unless they live next door ) so its around £70 an hour plus VAT £84. which includes overheads. that is not excessive. your average garage charges between £75 and £125 and that does not include VAT.

If it isn’t though is it. It’s £80 per service.
On an 8 hour day maybe 10 jobs at best. Travelling, paperwork etc
So about £800 a day. Including VAT
Considering what’s required to run a business and remain compliant I.e licensed for gas work. Pay and run the vehicle to travel in.
Also pay for holidays, pension, sickness, employers NI equipment and its calibrations plus training etc

And it’s rare to get that for 5 days a week 52 weeks a year. Consistently.

I pay £85 for my boiler service and think it’s a fair price.

But your very good value. Simon.

My merc specialist up here in the north is £65 plus VAT an hour

Mercedes themselves was £174 last time I used them 4 years ago!!!!!

Just had my van into a garage to sort the adblue fault. Small local place and they were £60 plus VAT too.

All this pricing in the UK is getting out of hand. £120 an hour will probably be plus vat so ovef £140 an hour. The normal working person after they've paid tax and national insurance probably need to work at least a full day to pay a mechanic for 1 hour. How can that be reasonable. Unfortunately it's become the new normal.

Very cheap, just a call out and doing nothing, just an inspection, and it costs as much.
Nobody flies to a job, and not all jobs are on factory floor on a single location to group them up into 8hrs.
Do you know how long, and what expenses you go through to become a gas engineer? And not everyone will be capable, even if you have the means to take the training.

We service gas fires - £70 +VAT - £84

With travelling we can do at most 6 a day.

We employ a gas engineer, vehicle and materials and pay for gas safety cert.

You would be surprised how many call for a service thinking that it includes repairing faults.

Just this week 2 calls for services on fires over 8 years old and never been serviced.

Services don't really pay but we feel we have to service fires that we sell.

If you don't want to pay don't have your appliances serviced - or safety checked...then don't..... simple (y)
