Decided it worth having a damp check done while we have some dealer warranty after reading some of the horror stories on here. £90 seemed money well spent so booked in for yesterday…..
Delivered empty motorhome to local coachbuilder at 9:00 yesterday half expecting (silly me) that they just might do it while I waited but was stunned to be told it would be about a week. Expressing my surprise the excuse given was that “we don’t work like the car trade”.
Not sure I’m happy with it being left in their compound until they get round to it but at least this cold weather puts us off going away. Am I being unreasonable expecting it to be done same day ?

Full habitation service only takes 2 - 3 hours, I usually just wait at the dealers while they do it , I would be looking elsewhere if I were you.

I had a full habitation service carried out last week in less than 3 hours.
If the warranty has expired, buy a damp meter and do it yourself in half an hour.

Mobile dealer came out to do mine and a gas check at the same time. Couple of hours and an £80 charge. If I were booking it in anywhere my first second question would be "how long do you want it?"

When I was in the motor trade we took on that type of work as a 'hospital job' and worked on it as and when someone had a bit of spare time between other work.
If its going to be in their yard for a week at this time of year and you haven't already done so, drain the water/heating system.

About 30 min for ours, it's just a visual check as internal walls are aluminum so they can't use a meter.

Why do you have to leave it, can't you just take it home and take it back when they can do it.

Ours has gone in today for the same thing. Mr Ginam will wait while it is being done, about 2 hours. He has taken a packed lunch and will drink the free coffee while he is there. Then when he gets back I will spend the rest of the week gradually putting all of our stuff back in the van:rolleyes:

Check your insurance, quite a few companies need notifying if your van is left for somewhere, other than the insured address, for over 48 hours unattended. This may fall into that category.

As previously said try a local mobile engineer, providing he has the correct qualifications it is as good, and safer, than leaving it at a workshop.

I really detest paying for these habitation checks.
£250 to tell you what you already know - everything is fine. Unfortunately, if you want to keep the damp warranty you have to pay it.

10 minutes if you’re not watching,3 hours if you are.Its a rip off, l have had a number of new MH’s and have never bothered and plenty do not.

We no longer have a warranty as we didn't get a damp check done last October when it was due. Around £150 for the check (nearly 3 times that for a hab!) plus 2 x 6 hour round trips to take it, leave with them, then collect, plus of course the car having to go twice as well. All they do is douse it in water then check if it's come in anywhere, in fact on the last one we did have done it had been raining heavily all the way there so that saved them having to douse it saving time and water .. no discount though! With some of the weather we've had if there were any leaks we'd well and truly know about them!

Some may say it's stupid not to do it but we know our MH (we check it ourselves every now and then) and with the construction method used we're not going to get rot in the walls which is the biggest damp killer of MHs, if we have an issue then we'll deal with it but having 11 MHs to date with only one* ever having any damp issue at all I'm not going to start worrying about it now. (*An old Elddis which had a little bit in one rear corner due to the sealant shrinking, the dealer we were px-ing with wasn't bothered at all it was so minor.)

We only need a an Damp check to maintain our Burstner A class warranty. We use Southdowns Motorhomes in Portsmouth. Take's about an hour. I walk round the corner and have a McDonald's breakfast and use their Wi-Fi to do a little work.
