.....and where can one top up in the UK and France?

Apart from the greatly reduced refilling cost compared to say Calor, a major advantage is that they can be refilled anytime, you don't need to wait until they're empty.
Refilling isn't as easy as diesel, but currently LPG is still available in most areas most often in petrol stations, although unless you're lucky you may need to get it when you can rather than shop around for price. The same applies to Europe.

As above but you will also need to adapt the entry point with a screw in adaptor as they (the french) have a different connection point)

How does it work?

It has a bottle which is connected to your regulator ( just as you would with a Calor bottle ) additionally the bottle/tank has another hose that connects to a filler point (which is typically fitted on the skirt of the Motorhome). The filler hose connection on the gas bottle is non-return (gas flows in but not out).

When filling the bottle, the LPG pump nozzle/connector is attached to the fill point and the pump is switched on. The bottle starts to fill and when it gets to 80% capacity a floatswitch mechanism inside the bottle closes, which prevents any further liquid gas flowing into the bottle. The LPG pump senses the increase in pressure and switches off.

Done.

(Description above covers a single gas bottle installation. You can have dual bottle with an automatic switchover valve).

I fill up at my local Shell garage. And in France many Supermarket service stations have LPG.

There are a couple of Apps for your phone that show the locations of the pumps. I use myLPG.

I doubt they'll still have it when you next go, so you'll need to shop around on the filllpg app.
I’ve 5 locations available within 4 miles of me. 👍🏻

I wish folk would check before posting wrong info?, I have the myLPG.eu app on my iPad and iPhone?🤔
I found that the .eu app was not kept properly up to date in the UK which is why I recommended a link that does not have an ios app.
And I did go to the app store and check before I posted.

It depends where in Kent you are, or where you go to.

There are dozens of places around the county, mostly on the main roads.
Many larger Morrisons supermarkets have LPG filling points as do many filling stations (but not Shell stations)
There is a great variance in price per litre for LPG (although even the most expensive is under half the price of Calor gas)
You need to use the apps listed upthread check out who is offering the best deal today on the route you are taking.

Personally I use the myLPG.eu app on my phone but the PC based FillLPG.co.uk website may be better for the UK. There are other websites such as LPGstations.com which also provide info, but it's not as uptodate.

It might be worth knowing that many of the (bottled) gas supply companies have pumps you can fill at. Whilst garages charge vat as a vehicle fuel the gas companies supply it for cooking and heating purposes therefore not subject to the extra vat. 👍

We had two 11kgs bottles, auto changeover, exterior filler point at rear of the van and an exterior BBQ / cooker point on the side of the van.

All fitted as part of our deal to buy the van, but having done our research, this worked out the best system for our needs.

All the continental adapters came with the kit. Works more or less the same as any gas system.

Look at the Gaslow website for all the information you need. (y)

But there is an an app on there for iPhone and iPad?🤔 Although it’s not FillLPG there are others just as good So why post no app?

To find filling points in the UK use Filllpg which is kept more up to date than other sources/apps.
No app on Apple phones but the web site link above is easy to use, if a bit clunky.

He is merely saying he finds ‘Filllpg’ the most reliable, but it is not available as an Apple app. He is not saying there are no lpg location apps on Apple

Pausim I’m sorry if I misinterpreted your post wrongly but from a newcomer looking at it you could assume there was no app at all for iPhone? 🤔😊

You missed out the best bit. When you disconnect the hose, there's a burst of liquid/gas (the bit in the hose) that is quite a surprise the first time you do it. But you soon get used to it.

In France and most of Europe it's called GPL not LPG. Look for GPL on the signs at the filling station. Also you can often spot the big white cylindrical tanks in some corner of the filling station site.

You have more choice than just Gaslow, which is usually offered by dealers because of the high margins. The two main rivals are Gasit which are cheaper and Alugas which is lighter but tends to be more expensive, but often is in fact cheaper than some dealers' quotes for Gaslow.

Autogas is getting a bit rarer in the UK but many Morrisons fuel stations have it, and there are plenty around if you look. And they are also plenty in most of Europe. We just fill up whenever we see one when we are touring. It is much cheaper than UK Calor but for me the main advantage is the convenience of not having to humping heavy gas bottles in and out of the gas locker.
