Hey everyone,

I’m looking into ways to keep my motorhome within legal and safe weight limits, especially when fully loaded for a trip. I know overweight vehicles can cause insurance issues in case of an accident, so I want to be proactive.

Has anyone here used a single axle weighbridge or an onboard weighing system to check their motorhome’s weight? Are they reliable, and do they help avoid overweight fines or insurance problems? Any other tips for managing weight distribution?

Would love to hear your experiences! Thanks in advance.

Find a public weighbridge and weigh your van. If overweight empty everything out and re weigh then prioritise what you’re putting in. 👍😁😎

I agree, so much depends, speeds, tax licence, on your ULW, it always best to get a certificated one especially now that, on some vehicles, payload can be so small.

I use our local weighbridge.
Drive on so the front wheels are on the weighbridge, record the weight, drive all wheels on, record the weight, and the drive off leaving the rear wheels on and record the weight.
As well as the overall weight, you have to be within the limits of your axle weights.
We had plenty of spare capacity on our front axle, so we moved what we could forward in our van to get within the rear axle limit

We have the AL-KO levellers with weighing function, keeps us honest with the weights, and what we take with us...it was a good decision to option it in when we had the levellers installed.

We bought ours with a keen eye on its weight. The first thing we did with it, empty bar a full tank of fuel, was weigh it. With that as a base level, we know what we have to play with. We've been away in January for the last 2 years and on each occasion we have been past the public weighbridge and weighed it. Weighed as a whole rather than as above...front axle, whole, rear axle. Quite satisfied we are well within limits.

Weighbridge and home scales

Home scales for me. I carry an 85kg moped on a tow bar mounted rack so needed to know the weights. The VOSA MoT test includes axle weights which are near enough the same as my home scales. Note if you buy some get the orange ones better for motorhomes and not the yellow more for caravans

Fit a towbar and bung all the heavy stuff in a trailer

We have the weights of virtually everything written down so removing and adding stuff can be calculated. We have also been to a weigh bridge and know what was in the van at the time. Unfortunately there is no local public weigh bridge, or not that I can find, so it has to be done while away.
