More questions...
We have no hot water and not a clue what the problem is? All I know is that if the red light comes on there is fault. The dam red light comes on! The van is an old 2002 fiat ducato and as far as we are aware the boilers not been used for years. In fact the van itself has only been used half a dozen times in years.
So... where do we start looking to rectify the problem? Or just find an engineer?
Thanks in advance for any advice to a complete novice.

I think for safety reasons get a gas engineer to look at it unless you know what you are doing. :(

The :( is for the cost - but what price safety? :)

Hi, and welcome to the club.
Firstly you need to know if your boiler runs off gas or gas/electric. If gas, is the gas turned on? second is the outside flue cover on? if so the gas will not light!
Also make sure the boiler is full of water, serious damage can occur if empty.
Hope this helps,
Cheers, Dave(y)

its possible that control is only for electric which will only work on hook up are there any other controls?

If it hasn't been used for years it's likely to have not been serviced for years, I'd get a technician to it
If it's the truma 6002 they are notorious for having not been drained down properly and having issues as a result.
Safer to have it checked cleaned and serviced less chance of you being poisoned

Thanks for all your help everyone, it really is very much appreciated.

To answer some of the questions / suggestions...
Not entirely sure if it's gas and electric or just gas? But doing some research believe it's just gas.
When we tried to get hot water the gas was on and the electricity was hooked up. The heating appears to work fine of the gas.
The water comes through the hot taps fine, just cold! We left it for 15-20 mins before trying it as advised.
The outside flu cover was on, so we will try it with that off this weekend.

Any ideas of the cost to get an engineer of sorts to check it over?

Thanks again all

If I've not used my gas for a while, it's almost impossible to light the fridge or the boiler.

So what I usually do is light a gas ring on the hob first. Only for thirty seconds or so, but this is enough to draw the gas up through all the pipes and everything else then lights first time (y)

It won't light with the outside cover ( used for travelling/ when parked for long periods to prevent ingress of diry/dust ) on.

I believe KAMINKAPPA ABNEHMAN as printed on the switch translates to REMOVE COWL/COVER.
That possibly the problem.
Could also be a faulty boiler thermostat.
Try it in both 50° and 70° positions as well.
If it's running on gas you'll feel the warm exhaust gas at the outside vent.
I doubt you'll feel anything on electric.

I recon your about right, Google translate :- KAMIN KAPPA ABNEHMEN to CHIMNEY CAP REMOVAL

Can you hear it trying to fire up before red light comes on, if so could be combustion fan, had a similar problem it transpired that a mouse had nibbled through the wires under the drivers seat, this was in some way connected to the boiler firing up!
