This is more about mileage and value. On ringing round for more insurance I’m coming up against the “ That’s a high mileage sir” I’m after 15k a year. I’m informed that most Motorhomes and campers are only travelling 3-4k a year. We have travelled 12k this year and off again soon. I’m also finding that a value of 84K seems a worrying figure to insurers.
Are any of you experiencing this negative response as some of the quotes I have been offered are what I consider to be excessive and greedy. 2-3k for a year is silly!

You are probably the exception rather than the rule. Many people dont do the mileage you do in a private car let alone a motorhome hence why the market is full of old low mileage motorhomes. Mines 21 years old with only 45K on the clock.

High mileage together with high value puts you at a considerably higher risk and many insurance companies don't like high risk.

So is your existing insurance company not willing to insure you now. Time to shop around I think but choice might be limited.

I suppose that if one does 3 times the average mileage, one must expect to pay 3 times the average cost as one can be 3 times more likely to have an accident due to other people's mistakes?

I think in the insurance industry, anything above 10,000 is regarded as high. The only thing one can do is, shop around.

Try NFU. We re similar value, 12k miles. They re right that this is high mileage but NFU does ours for just under £400 pa. The limitations you need to know about is that you do not automatically get Fully comp in Croatia. They do cover more companies as standard that many of the mainstream ones but only on basic cover, Morocco, Montenegro, Bosnia and I think Turkey although need to check.

NFU refused to insure me as they don't cover my area, too urban apparently. If I lived in the country they would insure me, go figure. Nothing to do with mileage, only 3k a year declared but could not get them to insure me. Turned me down flat when I gave them my postcode.

That is very cheap, especially for the NFU! 🙂

My insurance with NFU is £366 this year on a 95K van. Only got 5k miles.
I got a quote for 10k miles and is was £420.
I think you will find 10K is an acceptable limit albeit higher than average for a MH. Would be interested to hear what they quote if you had said 15K.

I’m with LV and my 2004 Burstner is obviously lower value, £30k, than yours. However they insured me in January for £290 with 15k miles. You need to ring them as their on line system doesn’t really cater for motor homes.

Have you tried Comfort?

We live in our van permanently so have Full-timers insurance which I know is different to your situation. However, Comfort mileage on our policy with Aviva is unlimited. Our van is well over £100,000 in value.

We have done over 30,000 mile in just over 2 years (first year was only 5,000 due to COVID lockdowns).

We have a '23 plate Ford based Swift Voyager. Insurance with Comfort £406 p/a with 10k limit. Currently on 7k and we have a trip to Spain in December so thought we would exceed the 10k limit. Rang them yesterday, now have unlimited mileage and cost extra £44 which I didn't think was too bad

When I renew with comfort I aways ask if there is any way I can make it cheaper, they always say reduce mileage so this year, for the first time, I went with 10k, not a chance of sticking to it and I believe when I ring them to top up it the difference will be greater than if I had taken it at the start and I will most likely incur the £25 admin fee, so in future when they say that is high mileage I will just say 'how much'. However, back to your original point, I don't think Comfort Insurance charged that much extra for the higher mileage and may be worth a try, it was my own fault for trying to save tuppence and yes there does seem to be many low mileage vans out there so assume there must be a lot of people who do less than 10k a year waiting until they retire and can make up, or have found their ideal destinations closer to home and no need to travel too far

Plenty of wonderful places to visit in the UK, no need to travels hundreds of miles to Spain or France, will be spending my money in this country.

You could try going for say 5-8K, then if you do stray near the mileage, then a call to extend it will most probably be a lot cheaper

Couldn't agree more, just that my hobbies and interests take me outside the UK, not trying to make a point that either one is better or worse than the other

Waste of time trying to use motorhome in the UK, very difficult to park anywhere hardly any Aires, trying to find somewhere to stop for the night is really hard most places expect you to book which is not possible when you don't know where you are going to be day to day.
The worst bit is you don't get many days at 30°, not holiday weather until its 30°.

Apart from a couple of rallies and the odd THS it's too much hassle for us it's so much easier across the channel and a lot cheaper.

Ok if you like shite weather.
Comfort only offer two choices. Up to 10k and unlimited
Always unlimited for me whatever the vehicle.

I don't know why you are having problems insuring a van for 84k that is almost budget tertiary these days not many vans under that.
As for mileage we do 8k to 10k a year so does everyone we know.
As mentioned try Comfort normally very competitive, we have been with them for years.

As seasoned campers having camped through storms and shite weather as you put it, a motorhome is luxury for us. You don't need good weather to enjoy the country.
Oh yes you do, last year in early May it was only 22° in Spain and we had a couple of days of rain.
What did we do? Came back to France where it was 30° and wall to wall sunshine.

If the UK weather is an issue for you why not move move to Spain or France, would be cheaper still and good weather all year round.

I thought this thread was about Mileage / Insurance and helping someone with a question!

Why do people always seem to make comments that are not relevant to the OP with just their opinions on a non related subject? Why comment on where is best to travel? It was not in the original question was it?

Can we have relevant posts that will help the OP rather than your thoughts on areas you think people should travel / visit and then telling people where they should live, otherwise the helpful post get lost in a pile of non related, non helpful and possibly even pointed comments and statements?

As I said Treefitter, try Comfort / Aviva if you have not done so already.

Try a different NFU office, some of them are not interested in motorhome insurance and make up all sorts of stories to get rid of you. The offices are all privately owned agencies and prioritise different types of business. The Brockenhurst branch have always been very helpful to me, even when I lived in an urban area 01590 624744.

Postcode does make a big difference, perhaps that is why you are getting expensive quotes.

Which office? They are all franchises. I don't think they are all keen on Motorhomes. I know the Shrewsbury Office and the Louth ones do.

These insurance companies do have some funny rules:
We were with Saga for years but they wont cover the engine size - whoever heard of a larger engined Mh being more dangerous!!

LV won't cover us because our chassis isnt listed with them and the brokers won't add it (MAN L2000).

I havent tried any that don't offer at least some Morocco cover.

I do  ,

We've only been back 4 weeks and finding the almost constant rain depressing, I heard it was mostly crap here all the time we were away and when we were here in August it wasn't great. I would move to Spain tomorrow but my wife won't because of family and language.
