We just got back from a stay at Abbey Wood Club Campsite and we were genuinely surprised at how peaceful it was – especially considering how close it is to Central London! We managed to combine relaxing in greenery with sightseeing in the city – best of both worlds really. I’ve put a short video together with our thoughts and a proper look around the site if anyone’s considering heading that way. 😊

It’s odd that you think it’s a hidden gem. It’s extremely well known, and is starting to become difficult to book, particularly as the CAMC site at Crystal Palace has now closed.

Used it 3 times as a base while running the London marathon, we really enjoyed it and thought it was ideal for city access. I assume the faster line they were building is now open

Is it a problem getting there if you have a 2005 Motorhome?
Yes, a financial problem of £300 a day for you and I Paul, so arriving at Abbey Wood on a Friday afternoon, then leaving on Sunday morning gets us stung for £600. Not bleddy likely.

Jock. :(

We have had a lot of comments that they did not know about it. We also discovered today there is a site in Chertsey so we need to look into that one too.

The Elizabeth line is clean and fast. :giggle:

I used to go there a lot when I had offices down in the Docklands. Think the last time I was there was probably 2007.

Great site.

I have pictures of the squirrels begging at my windows somewhere. Will try and dig them out. They are hilarious.

I'm there now, it's C&CC not CAMC if that's relevant.
I've enjoyed it but it's not anywhere near full.
Lot of traffic noise from the M3, and frequent aircraft. Doesn't bother me.
Any questions just ask.

I used to commute into Central London every day, it'd be fun to go back after 40 or so years in my Motorhome!
Likewise. I even used to drive buses in London so it was good to see how much it has changed.

I remember when the land where Canary Wharf sits today was abandoned and derelict.

I was surprised at how much wildlife was there. It made for a very pleasant visit.

Hmm, i still think we will check it out. The M3 is very convenient for us.

Can you post some pictures of the site?

Yes, the Elizabeth line is now up and running.
Central London, 5 min walk to the station and 27 mins on the train.
Heathrow is an hour away.

Which means if you need to go to Heathrow it is actually faster, to stay at Abbey Wood and cross London,
(without any changes, your Hab door to the Terminal door)
Compared to Chertsey campsite which is a lot closer in miles to Heathrow, but longer in time! (door to door)

The West End is 27 mins from the Abbey Wood site compared with Chertsey, which is at least an hour and half.
Despite being similar distance.

For a site that you intend to use to access London it's ALL about the transport links, all other considerations are secondary.
  • How many minutes walking to the nearest station (or is it a bus journey away ?)
  • How frequent are the trains ?
  • Is it inside Zone 6 ? (Which is where the fares are subsidised by the London Mayor, 1 station outside the zone can double your cost)
  • How many minutes to the West End ? (Anything under an hour means you are in the commuter belt, which extends at least 50 miles beyond the M25

And the other big question.
If you have a pre-2014 vehicle, do you have to pay the LEZ costs ?
Enter your numberplate here to find out.
This only applies to sites within the M25

Note: Londoners never drive through the centre of London, it 'may' be half the distance, but it's twice the time.
Use the M25.
Also remember all crossing of the Thames east of Battersea Bridge are tolled on line in some form, either as a Congestion change to a TFL charge or the Dart Charge.

Also saw deer and foxes if memory serves. LOADS of birds as well.

I did wonder where the deer came from and how they got through the wire mesh fence.
