Hi all. I am speedily approaching my seventies, its just a number, and my wife and I currently enjoy caravanning. The thing is, we fancy buying a motorhome and touring every single bit of the UK. My real question is, could we get a decent van for between £25-28k? How much a year should we put by for running costs? Any and all help will be most helpful. Thank you.

Welcome to the Fun!

You should get a decent van for that budget, depending on the size/specification you want.

Always wise to check past MOT history to look for signs of rust in important places.

You'll get a nice older van for that
Running costs vary depending on how you use them
How much you spend on unnecessary toys
Where you choose to stay
Many people give them names
Money pit is a common one  :welcome4:

Hi and a warm welcome to the family of Fun 🤩

To be honest, how longs a piece of string.

Theres no hard and fast calculation for this. It’ll depend on how many nights away per year, if you’ll be using camp sites, so anything from around £20-£75 a night, again depending on where you stay. Joining clubs, insurance, breakdown cover etc, servicing, bottles of plonk, whether you’ll be heading over the canal to EU, so best search the site as there’s a whole heap of info waiting for you to read.

We work on £2000 a year for the keeping the van on the road.
Tax MOT servicings insurance etc before you drive it anywhere.
We don't always get through all that but there is times when tyres are needed of an airbag control ecu.

I often suggest set a budget. Then put 15-20% back in your pocket :giggle:
Then you have cash ready for the inevitable repairs or upgrades you decide you want - new boiler, solar panels, better batteries, replace those tired old shock absorbers..... you get the idea.

One thing might be relevant is your driving licence. Up to age 70 you can drive any motorhome with a maximum weight of 7500 kg. However over age 70 if you want to drive anything over 3500 kg you have to apply for a C1 licence, and renew every 3 years. You have to take a medical as well.

A 3500 kg motorhome might be fine for you, but it's as well to be aware of the problem as you are looking.

Welcome! :welcome3:
You are never too old to start motorhoming, and your previous tugging experience will be useful.

I swapped to a Moho at 74 and haven't regretted it. A lot less setup hassle than hooking and unhooking a caravan. Having said that, the UK isn't particularly motorhome friendly and, on balance if sticking to the UK, I'd say a caravan, despite its shortcomings, is possibly better.

I bought this Spring within your budget figures. Given that you already caravan I doubt the need to rent before buying. You already have the necessary feel for whether it suits you.
