We have a boiler that purges at 3 degrees or less and when i tried to fill up the water tank the other day when it was cold, the system would purge and empty the 10 litres of water that went into the boiler. My question's are: Where is the sensor temperature taken from? What do you do if you want to fill the tank in cold weather?

If it's a Truma or similar, trun the heating on for 10 mins without the water, if your system allows.
This heats the area near the dump valve allowing you to reset it and fill up.
Failing that, try a hair dryer on the dump valve or a peg to hold it closed whilst everyting warms up.

It would help if you tell us the Moho eg Hymer,Pilote etc etc?

My water gets dumped at about 5degrees,so I put a peg on the valve thingy to stop it. Obviously you have to be careful about doing this as the last thing you want is frizen pipes and boiler.
Somewhere near your boiler you will see the frost protection switch/valve.

You missed this bit on the OP's info.

Frost stat tends to look like this and is often nearby the boiler so heating the boiler first can allow you to reset the stat.
Press blue button to reset

Our van has a new fangled dump valve that is 'clothes peg' proof.
It has a system where when you turn a knob on the top which, when turned depresses the valve. In addition, (which the author missed on the first occasion) there is a button to press which locks the valve in place.
Like what he said(above)

Good grief.
Freezing in Zelah. There's rare.

Thank you all, we have tried the heating for 2 hours and also putting the water heater on but the blue button kept popping out therefore i wondered where the sensor was.

Did you twist the blue lever then press the button to reset it? Daft question, I know but all I could think of. It caught me out the first time.

Edit - I don’t think that there is an external sensor. what you see is it........

Hi, Heating is a major issue that I've found out over the last few days, I have a two year old Alde system that won't heat the van or deliver hot water. Hopeing to call them in the morning and get a fix, but I'm also thinking now of a diesel back up going forward.

Surprised at that. Mine is very good indeed. Had it serviced last year and fluid changed at Alde UK HQ. Highly recommended

Some manufacturers fit the dump valve in an unheated locker away from the boiler, there was a Funsters who had a Knaus like that and it kept dumping even with the van in use.

Normally not a problem if the dump valve is near the heater.
Truma sell a heating unit for the dump valve I think its about £40.

It should click and stay 90° and the button should stay in. Have you tried warming a cloth or something and placing it over the unit for a while Then try resetting? That is a very long shot.........

sadly it looks like the unit may have had a spring failure or similar

As a Jury rig, provided your van is already warmed, can you wedge the blue button in with a piece of wood or something similar to hold it there?

If you put the Truma Blue Frost Control Dump Valve in your house freezer in the set position after a few minutes it will clunk and go to the dump water position. You cannot reset it until it warms up to over 3C approx.
{ I did this experiment out of curiosity }
The earlier version that people disable with a clothes peg requires 12V to make it work.
The SET position of the Blue Truma Frost Control valve is the Blue plastic Toggle 90 degrees to the main body with the blue button pressed IN.
The 'Dump water position' is the Blue toggle in line with the main body and the blue button 'popped out'.
I have been told that there is a bi-metalic strip inside the unit that senses the temperature.
The idea of having the frost Control Valve is to protect your water system especially an expensive boiler from freezing causing damage to the water system and the leisure vehicle { damp }.
It is advisable to drain the fresh water system if you are not using the leisure vehicle as the Potable drinking water goes stale, slimy, mouldy etc over time plus water is heavy and you will use more fuel driving just to the shops etc.
I carry a 10L water container for cups of tea etc

I have juts taken delivery of a new Adria Twin this week and the dumping of water happened to me last night. I knew the the valve drains the water from the boiler but I didn't expect to also drain the cold water tank. Other than keeping the van warm is there any other way to stop the cold water draining? e.g. can you stop the water flowing to the boiler in the first place so when the dump valve operates it only drains the boiler? It the Truma system I have with the frost valve in a hatch under the floor.

It depends where your water tank is, ours just drains the hot tank but if your water tank is higher than the valve it will drain the tank as well.

When we had an Adria twin the dump valve was inside a small hatch in the storage area under the twin beds. I filled it with insulation material which helped a lot.

Hi it may help if you turn the pump off when you go to bed then the boiler tank won’t fill theoretically 🥸
