Of course this has happened on the night before a trip but when I tried to switch on my habitation electrics the panel gave a low battery warning.

I have a Truma solar panel & charger for the leisure battery which has been keeping it topped up ok until today.

Switching the control panel to work from the van battery works as normal

I’ve measured the voltage of the battery at 5v
At the connections to the solar controller, the voltage from the panel is 20v and the output for the battery (with the battery still connected is 5v)

Disconnecting the battery from the charger gives zero volts at the charger.

Is this likely to be a dead battery? It’s a banner battery and is at least 5 years old

Is my best option to disconnect the leisure battery and buy a replacement on my trip tomorrow?
it’s an auto trail van with Sargent electrical system. Would that work ok without the habitation battery if on mains hook up and switched to van battery?

Thanks

If the leisure battery is only showing 5V I would assume it’s dead.

Isolate the solar panels from the solar controller (there may be a removable fuse or a switch - failing that cover the panels) before replacing the battery. Fit the new battery before reconnecting the solar panels.

It’s probably not a good idea to let the mains charger try and charge a dead battery or run the motorhome on EHU without a battery.

thanks - that was my diagnosis but a second opinion is reassuring.
