Hi all. New here and lots to learn. We have had an old VW type 2 camper for over 20 years and in 6 months we are retiring so want to upgrade to something a little more comfortable for UK and Euro travels.

I can see it’s a minefield given all the different types of vans and configurations so looking forward to getting stuck in (I have 6 months to buy one). Any advice on where to start is much appreciated.

All the best
Fred

You could make a start here and now via autotrader:

You can glean a lot by surfing those ads.
Price, layout and size will be your principal criteria. Once you have got a handle on those you can get down to the finer but important detail of which chassis and brand.

Seriously consider an electric bed that disappears upwards during the day, gives you lots more room.

:HelloThere: And :WelcomeFlag:Fred.

The best way to get advice is to ask questions.

The favourite thing for Funsters is answering questions.

You’ve come to the right place - ask away!

If you are over or nearing 70 years of age you will need to have , and retain your C1 licence for a van over 3500 cwt . Dealing with the DLVA has been my idea of hell … just saying ! Otherwise it’s layout and a European van IMO if you want to use it in winter. Everything else is usually ok with a tweak ❤️ welcome btw

Well thanks for all the replies, much appreciated.

Been looking at Autotrader, YouTube etc for layouts and so far likening the more compact vans with the electric bed above, something like a swift spirit 604, Rollerteam T-Line 590 or Autotrail F-Line F62 (from my limited research) also the French bed layout. Not sure on pricing, or if it’s best buying new or used - as I say lots to learn.

I will take a look at those posts and guides and then ask away, thank you for that.

My wife and I are a year into our 50’s so should be ok, looking to get something that I can drive with my licence, albeit I do have the old style so C1 covered.

In respect of posting questions on ‘which van’ etc, where is best to do that?

Thanks again for the warm welcome.

Welcome, keep it nice and simple and put it in the "motorhome chat" section til you narrow them down eg "Cant decide which rollerteam to buy"

Rent at least two (or more) before you even start looking.
What you think you want and what you actually need are very different.

Look around other motorhomes in campsites, owners are usually very good at telling you the good and the bad (and the ugly) about their own vans (and ones they have owned in the past.)

That’s a very sensible idea, we will do that.

Welcome , exciting times buying another van 👍

Welcome.
Get around some dealers to actually get inside as many vans as possible with as many layouts to narrow down your search.

ey up!
as above - spend some time looking around local motorhome sales plots - we spent ages hopping in and out of many different vans which helped us buy our "3rd" van first time around.

I think you need to be a paid member to access the buyers guide and lots of other stuff. Also you only get 5 free posts.

Hello, I'm new on here to, but have looked (online) at hundreds and may 50 in the flesh. We settled for the knaus because 2 beds was important and under 6m due to the ferries. Try the motorhome shows, however watch out where they are located. You don't want one that's at the other end of the country. You will get offered lots of good deals so it is tempting and always ALWAYS take a damp meter with you, even for new vans. good luck
