Heads Up?

Ignore last post. Just been to take a photo and I could see the tree through the reflective foil. I could do with cutting the non slip stuff back, but it doesn’t cause a problem.

I've no need for this. I can always guess my speed within 3mph. Maybe it's a superpower :D
I can in MPH, it’s Kilometres that throw me. Yes the foil came with the kit. I bought it from Halfords. I sat in the drivers seat once the unit was working, someone moved the foil about until I could see it clearly, then it was stuck on the inside of the screen

I used to use a HUD that used the semi-transparent foil on the windscreen, but it was often very difficult to read in certain lights. When it broke, I replaced it with a Ma Way, which is very much better as it uses its own screen.
It can connect to the OBD port or use GPS. It can show mph or km/h, and various parameters by selecting from the menu. I have it showing engine battery voltage, a little rpm indicator and compass heading. I much prefer the display derived from the OBD because it does not vanish when in tunnels and is not affected by flaky signals such as caused by surroundings.

I've made a little wooden pedestal for it, but non-slip mat would do just as well. The view in the picture is from my eye level.

I use an old phone and free app In a phone holder stuck to the right hand side of the dash binnacle. Especially good abroad as u can set it to read kmh

I am glad 'Cavs' introduced the possibility of a stand-alone HUD display screen instead of one stuck on the windscreen, which in our case is 1m from eye and often subject to a lot of sunshine - we have no overcab 'roof'.

I started a thread on the subject of HUDs , maybe on another forum.

I got as far as deciding I wanted a separate screen type, but I would also like to also display the satnav info from our free app on the Samsung phone. They do exist - not very cheap, but affordable.

Does anyone have an HUD that can do that and what is the make and opinion?

Geoff

Are these legal in the position you’ve got them? above the steering wheel
It’s illegal to have a sat nav in the centre of the windscreen it has to be to the right of the driver in right hand drive vehicles because they can block the view.

and more accurate than the Fiat speedo providing your at a steady speed.
At a true 65mph on the sat nav it shows as 70mph on the speedo (Ducato x250) and also on the hud. I haven't noticed any pronounced lag on the sat nav.

As regards the hud, mine was just usable, but was too often switching itself on or off when I didn't want. I even had it turn on at night while we were in bed, keys in ignition only. It's in the bin now.

It's not just fiats that have speedo visabilty problems, wife moans like hell about the vw up in less than ideal light, ive no problem but have difficulty with my skoda and wife doesnt. For these vagcom to the rescue and various options available. Vag forums (ok fora) full of it To get the central computer display to read in large character first change country to Australia and units from km to miles, so captain underpants find the best way for you.
For the van i use a phone ap.

You can also get an app for any smart phone too. Not sure about HUD though?.

Example on Amazon, they seem to be all about this cost?. Amazon product ASIN B01LJCA1B0
One Benefit, is that the GPS signal will likely be more accurate than the Vehicle readout.

Got mine on eBay £12 works a treat

Anybody using a heads up display to overcome not being able to read the speedo in the gloomy recess of the Ducato X290 dash? I was looking at the Scosche HUD2 which uses the OBDII port. Not expensive, but is it any good?
Yep been using one for the last 6 months. Just returned from a 5k trip around Europe and it was perfect for speedo, engine temp and battery voltage (could choose other displays though). Changes from klm's to mph easily. Bought from Amazon for £13 If I recall correctly!

I don’t mean to be rude.....but.......the Specsavers ad comes to mind!

Is the speedo really that bad? If so,how the hell did it get past all the R and R? Bizarre!

Well I can see our speedo(Ducato 2003) when it is cloudy or in the garage, but impossible when it is competing with sun reflecting off shiny dash covering and my pupils go to catseye slits. Also when I look at hooded Ducato display my eyes need a couple od seconds to adjust - not safe driving.

We use phone with satnav app which shows speed better and is more accurate than a feed off the OBD port which presumably shows same speed as original speedo, ie. over-reads.

That's true, but the Ma Way I mentioned above (#35) can be adjusted for this, so it reads true.

I was checking the reading on my unit from the ODB port whilst driving in France and Germany - when passing the roadside radar speed signs. I'm guessing they are not the most accurate things either but in the 20 to 70 kl/h range it was within 1 kl/h each time I passed one.

Perhaps the Ducatio does not over-read as much as I thought it would?
