Have shell stopped selling gas?

Hi There Just for info.
Shell at Bridgetown Shipton Rd Stratford Upon Avon stopped selling LPG on the 2nd or September, I was probably one of the last MHs to fill up there.
Best Wishes Tony

Just been to my nearest Shell that had a pump to find it’s been removed, A57 Liverpool Road at Huyton.

It would be such a shame if getting LPG becomes impossible, it has saved me a fortune. I used to be stuck with Camping gas until I fitted Gaslow . I hope it won't happen , if you drive an LPG vehicle it must me worrying. Makes you wonder though if electric will go the same way in the future

In France at present. Prices vary from about euro 0.81 to over 1.0 a ltr and it is getting harder to find stations with pumps.

I have Safefill bottles & I use the myLpg.eu app to find LPG. It shows you the LPG points in your area. A lot of the motorway service garages seem to have LPG. That is not to say we don't have problems at some garages who do not understand the Safefill bottles are safe to refill.

Shell are withdrawing all LPG pumps from their forecourts by 2020 (not sure if that's Jan 2020 or Dec 2020)

I e-mailed them to ask if rumour was true and got same reply as Pete4x4.

Anyone want to buy an LPG powered car?

They certainly do, on an admittedly unscientific basis, seem to be reducing in number. What I've also experienced at pumps near me, that the pumps themselves are not maintained very well. I tried to fill up at the BP garage near Bilborough just outside York and the pump connected but after only a few seconds it switched off. I filled up at Fishguard on the same trip and it took £11 of gas, so I knew the tank was nearly empty.
Similarly, we went to one on the Harrogate Road outside York and the nozzle had been damaged and was unusable. Would like to find a reliable one near York.
BATA at Gate Helmsley (York) 4 miles off the A64, down the A166 towards Bridlington has LPG. (down the side of the forecourt building not on the fuel forecourt. I missed it the first time I visited)

LPG filling spots have been disappearing for a couple of years, but now they are going fast. Petrol, Hybrids and Leccy cars are the focus of makers. The low and decreasing number of LPG users just doesn't make economic sense to the forecourt operators.

In 5 years I doubt you'll be able to give your Gaslow bottles away while Mr Calor rubs his hands and we all go back to buying his overpriced bottles.
Hope you're wrong as I've just been considering an underslung tank:(
edit: damn this an old post - wondered what 596 was doing on it!

Our local Flogas stockist has taken their pump away ☹️

My local Shell station on the A23 at Hickstead has just opened after total refurb and no longer has an LPG pump. No problem as I can fill at the BP station on the A23 just 5 miles further South, on the outskirts of Brighton at Pyecombe.

Hi Everyone the only upside that I can see to this slightly depressing thread is that with some companies removing LPG pumps we will all have to head for the ones which are left, this in turn by selling much more LPG might make the remaining companies keep the remaining pumps and halt the pump reduction. Best Wishes Tony

Here in Poland we have many LPG outlets - most stations on main roads have it, albeit a bit pricey, so not good if you are running an LPG powered car, but for topping up cooking/heating LPG for €5 (equivalent) who cares about the price.

Also we have not found a problem in France or Germany, except the Pyrenees, but we still have an untouched Calor from 8 years ago as a back-up.

We have an underslung gas tank, I hope we will be able to get gas as we have nowhere to put gas bottles. At the moment Trago Mills at Newton Abbot (Shell) still have lpg pumps, if they are removed I'll have to check out the Calor depot at Lee Mill

I wonder if LPG conversions on petrol engine cars will make a comeback especially at the price of petrol now and the higher number of miles people tend to travel?
It's not so easy to convert modern petrol direct injection engines and there can be a high risk of serious damage occurring.

I myself would not mind paying a bit more per liter say £.90 just to keep the convenience of filling up the way I do at the moment. Best Wishes Tony

Nearly all the local Shell garages are now showing as LPG not available on the app.

Asked at Morrisons this weekend and they have no problem with MH's so will fill there while I still can.

Its not too bad around here as we have a handful of different suppliers to choose from even if some stop. Sods law cheapest one is 53p but looks a bugger to get into with MH and no room to turn around.

I've got one of them. I call mine a BBQ connection ?.
On a serious note, you would have to be very careful doing that, Most (BBQ) are connected to the LP side of the system, and you will need a separate Regulator, and should have incorporated an N-R valve. The extenda-stay, uses High Pressure hose and an NPT type connection. (Actually it`s an American gas cylinder fitting)

If filling stations are intent on removing pumps, (for those heavier users, that have the space at home) ......one option would be to get a larger cylinder delivered/installed to home and top up your refillable tank from that?

Extra cost up front, but maybe offset (a little) by the cost of the gas and very convenient ....

Can you even do that? Doesn't the pump supply liquid gas where a bottle puts out gas vapour.... Thats what I thought anyway

Maybe you can get both types

LPG is a liquid when under pressure - as it is when its a filling station tank or cylinder.
It only becomes a vapour when the ambient pressure decreases - thats why you get a shot of vapour when you disconnect the hose.
If you connect a cylinder to your tank, its all still at a high pressure, so the gas will stay liquified

Get that bit,

What I mean is you couldn't use a spare gasit or gaslow as they are designed to output just the gas and have liquid seperators in as liquid gas would kill the reg or be dangerous. Also why the pigtails are meant to run down back to the tank. The burst after filling is just liquid lpg in the nozzle/fill pipe.

Forklift trucks run on the liquid I think so is why they put the bottle on the side

As long as the filler tank you are using can output liquid lpg it could work though. But the cost and fittings would take some re-couping

Maybe I'm getting my wires crossed

The need for a regulator should be obvious (it is to me). The bottle regulator hose should be the same as used in the past in the gas locker when the regulator was on the bottle. Both bottle and fixed regulators are effective NR valves. No special care is needed other than that taken whenever a LPG connection is made or broken BUT it's always wise to ensure one has a decent understanding of the process.

No - not suggesting using spare bottles. Suggesting if you’re miles from a filling station in future, maybe a 200lt tank out back, that’s filled once a year and then you can top up the van as and when required.
Not the cheapest option but the most convenient if filling stations did really start to disappear ?

They aren't disappearing on the "Fill LPG" app. When it updates it totals 3 statistics...

Added, removed, and updated.

Every few days one is added or deleted but mostly they are just updated.

Even if they do all dissappear from forecourts you'll still be able to get it from distribution plants (probably?)
I don't suppose they will show deleted or not selling LPG any longer unless someone specifically goes on the website to advise the various website operators of a outlet that has discontinued selling LPG.

Not as soft as it might seem. Local Market Gardener in the 1990`s had a Tank for his Glasshouses, and a filling pump/connection for his Fork Lift Truck. Which conveniently also fitted an adapter on the R-V!!. Being a big 7.4L "gasser" he had it converted to Petrol/LPG!.

Our local garage at Intermarche here in France has just removed their LPG pump. So it seems to be happening outside of the UK as well.

Just refurbished the petrol garage at Wetherby services and added a new LPG station which theybdidn't have at all before

The shell garage on the A69 was advertising it today.

Get ours from BP in UK no prob and all over France Spain Italy Germany which is why I fitted my Gas-it cylinder to save having to have different bottles in different countries. I never buy Shell products on principle.
