Received videos and photos from our son who lives in mantova (30 mins from Verona ) of a flash hailstone storm last night . Wouldn’t like to be in a motorhome there :-(

On our last French trip we stayed on an Aire in Coutras and walking around the town I couldn’t believe the damage on the cars, it must be a hot spot for hail storms because a lot of the cars were covered in dents from hail stones.

20 years ago we were camping under canvas in Garda (close to where our son lives )- the same happened . Devastation everwhere - hundreds and hundreds of cars queuing to get replacement window screens in a pop up repair site in a nearby field , my brand new vw gold tdi car to have every panel replaced .

My mate left his Toyota Yaris in Pescara Italy near the airport a few years ago . When he got back a couple of days after a hail storm there wasn’t a panel on the car that didn’t have dents. The bodywork resembled an orange . Cracked headlight and windscreen. The insurance company wrote it off . The car was only a couple of years old so he bought it back from the insurance company and had the lights and windscreen replaced . Even got a reasonable trade in price when he got his next car. !
My Motorhome has three solar panels on the roof , 2 Maxxfan vents . The costs could be huge if your unlucky to get caught in one of these hail storms!

This was in Spain about 5 years ago. It didn't do any damage but the noise of it hitting the skylight was very loud.

We've been caught in a hailstorm in the motorhome in Italy and, even though the stones weren't anywhere near as big as the ones shown, the noise inside is horrendous. We were eating a meal and both had to stop eating until the storm passed over.

Something similar to us years ago near Thiers north of Clermont Ferrand We had to get our windscreen for the car replaced. Fortunately caravan windows were ok. Then on return home bonnet, tailgate, door of car and roof of caravan.

Experienced these during a thunderstorm storm a couple of years ago at Brantome. Scared the life out of us. We had a couple of minor dents, but few level/flat surfaces and corrugated roof on the PVC saved us I think. French tugger parked next to us was peppered with dents on his car bonnet, roof & boot. I’m amazed the hatches and solar panel weren’t damaged.

A few years ago we were caught in a short hailstorm in St Vallery , they were the size of a large marble . Roof was covered in small dents . Didn't try to claim off insurance as it is an old van. Just call them 'Battle scars' can only really see them if you really look hard. A few vans arrived later that had driven through it and had more damage to the sides .

I was woken at 5 am last month in SW France by a thunderstorm with what sounded like dozens of rocks landing on the van's roof. Very worrying - I expected there would be some damage.

After I got home I inspected the roof. Luckily no visible dents or cracks anywhere. I was pitched under trees so I think the branches and dense summer foliage absorbed some of the kinetic energy of the quite large hailstones.

I did wonder how the local wildlife especially roosting birds copes with these events.

After a day in Barcelona came back to the Caravan in Stiges with a dented roof and ice lining the sides of the roads around the site a foot deep where it had been swept up.
But hay ho it was still 30°

Those are some hail stones, we got caught in a flash storm, not as big stones as those though, in August a few years ago, between Scarborough and hull, were bringing grandchildren home after a glorious week in the motorhome.

Yes it would. We had hailstone damage in Vichy France about 7 years ago. The roof and one side had multiple small dents and all roof lights were replace. Total cost £9000. The roof and side were over skinned with aluminium sheet and and the windows and doors cut out. Obviously an insurance claim but with it being a non driving claim the next years premium only increased marginally.

I'm surprised they do not class it as 'an Act Of God' that was the Ferries get out clause when I was taking trucks abroad?

Blimey. We got photos from our daughter in Murcia today of Spanish hailstones. Thought they were big enough.
