Recently we bought a 2nd hand Motorhome. It is nearly 4 years old and still has 3 years left on its habilitation warranty (7 years in total). The previous owners had it booked in for its 4 year check and when I enquired about taking on the warranty it was met with “did you buy the MH from us”. When I explained they sold it to the previous owners they seemed to accept the situation. That was 3 weeks ago and due to the dealer registering new vehicles, they haven’t done anything about it yet.
The MH has had no problems in the 4 years.
My question is a/ is it worth keeping the warranty going based on the fact that Chausson want £90 to change ownership & dealer charges over £320 to do the yearly check 😓.
b/ in the 3 years left on the warranty would £1k cover any leaks etc to be fixed?.
Anyone with any experience with habitation warranties or getting leaks etc fixed?
 
Also the kind people on here will have had most of the problems you may come across and others will have a fix for most of them. There is no such thing as a silly question.

Check if you need a hab check or just a damp check which will be a lot cheaper

Reading through the manual, it has to have a full maintenance check up (Electrics, gas, water tightness etc).

A damp issue could cost you well over £1000 when you consider that most repairers charge at least £150 an hour.,thats only 7 hours work.ie a day. :unsure: o_O

There are lots of us on here who’ve never had any hab checks done by dealers etc. I do all my own and wouldn’t dream of paying out such an extortionate amount that they now demand.

Understandable if it’s a brand new van and it needed to be done to keep the warranty intact, but after 4 years and only 3 left on a secondhand van, I personally wouldn’t bother. Wonder if the dealers found a major fault, that they’d stand by it for repairs.

£1000 would cover many repairs should they be required. Get a damp meter from Wicks (other places supply) and check it yourself.

No van has a full 7 year warranty it will be just a water ingress warranty.
Not uncommon for Chausson's to have water ingress problems so probably worth keeping up as damp repairs can cost thousands.

There are two independent Chausson service centres in the UK. They tend to take on the warrantry and service work for vans that are having problems with getting work done by the appointed Chausson Dealers. They are Rivers Motorhomes in Stratford upon Avon and Cannocks Resprays. If you have not found it yet there is a very good Chausson Owners Group on Facebook, lots of very good Chausson based advice on there.

Thanks Eric, I applied to join the group on Facebook a few weeks ago but for some reason it never got accepted. With regards to the Chausson work, I don’t think it is a problem of getting the habitation service done, it is more of getting peoples opinion about is it worth it for the remaining 3 years which will cost me £1k.
I‘m quite confident at diy and undertake most work (with being from a construction background), but not sure how far a dealer would go if they had to repair a leak 🤷‍♂️. Would it be blob of sealant to plug a hole or doing a proper strip down.

It's a Chauson, so you need the water ingress warranty. Read the warranty cover details carefully, as if there is wriggle room, they will get out of paying. £1000 for repairing water ingress is a drop in the ocean (pun intended)

Some people have had the overcab window replaced and that would be a lot of money for just one repair. But like all things in life it is a matter of risk, so would a repair be a blob of sealer, it may be, lots of tales of windows leaking, which only require screws being done up. But others have had new garage doors. So you need to decide yourself. One thing I would say is have all the annual inspections been done by Chausson approved workshops? Chausson will void the warranty if non-approved workshops are used. No point in paying out for annual services if the warranty is already void.
And welcome to the world of Chausson, enjoy your van there are many more happy owners than unhappy ones.

The handbook has 4 dealer stamps in it.

Wouldn’t want to undertake overcab window replacement, but leaky window would be easy enough.

My thought on this is that if there haven't been any major issues needing rectification to date there's likely not to be any in the future so long as you check it yourself to spot rectify any developing problems.

We have a Carthago A-class which came with a 2 year hab and 7 or 10 year (can't remember) water ingress warranty and all we have to have done for the warranty is a damp check, it's now 3.5 years old but didn't bother doing it at 3 years. Why? Well due to the aluminium inner and outer walls you can't use a damp meter on it so the way it's done is to drench it in water and then checked for leaks, that's it ... something I'd easily spot myself, consequently paying around £145-£160 for a damp 'eye-ball inspection' plus travelling to/from the dealer, didn't seem sensible nor necessary. Whether we'll come to regret this I don't know, but of all the MH's we've had in the past none of them have ever sprung any leaks, not even our old Elddis coachbuilt.
