The warranty period on my motorhome has now come to an end so it doesn't need to go back to the dealer (which is some considerable distance away) for its annual inspection so now I'm casting around for alternatives in North Yorkshire. I've come across an outfit called Habcheck which looks like a franchise operation who could do the check at the storage site where I keep the vehicle.

Does anyone have any experience of using this company (or any others in the area)?

TIA

Yes, it is a franchise so no guarantee how good the operative is. My son is a motorhome technician who wasn’t impressed by the work of a Habcheck engineer.

He is a member of another organisation - MCEA - so maybe worth checking them out too.

I advise you to proceed with more than a little caution. The one I had done a while back wasn't worth the paper it was written on. The attitude of habcheck when I complained wasn't great. They took no responsibility and passed the whole buck back on to the engineer. I would have been better spending the money on a decent damp meter and doing the job myself. I was forced to use them as they were the only one available at short notice, wonder why that was. The engineer cut corners, didn't fill in half the sheet, didn't test some of the items. The habitation door was in disrepair and wasn't noted on the hab checksheet. The report had no value. Now, I'm sure they have some great engineers that do a great job but I wouldn't go near them again.

They are very very clever as they can check that gas heating, gas hot water, fridge on gas and gas cooker all operate properly and safely without the van having a gas bottle or them bringing gas with them.
Personally I wouldn't touch them with someone else's barge pole.

On our 4th new van never had a hab check on any of them just the damp check to keep the water ingress warranty

And needless to say that when a gas bottle was purchased and connected only the gas cooker worked.
The heating needed a new igniter and the fridge needed a new jet and good clean of the burner, flue and thermocouple.

I contacted Habcheck once on the phone (didn't use them in the end), but since then I have had never-ending calls from them to try and get my business.

I don't like franchises because the quality is variable. Find a good local AWS member - often they do both caravans and motorhomes - and talk to them. Some of the mobile mechanics are good too, and they come to you.

For the last 5 years or so we have used Kiwi.

Excellent service and I have no hesitation in recommending them. Only thing is, they’re so good, they’re very busy so book early.

Even though our warranty period has long elapsed, we like having the gas and electricity system checked annually. We are not techie enough to do this ourselves unlike several posters who pooh-pooh the need for habitation tests post warranty. Each to their own.

Was told on Monday by the mechanic who was carrying out the service and mot on the van to check my insurance re hab check as his as recently added ‘annual check on gas and electric equipment must be carried out’ in the small print at the bottom of his policy.
