Does anyone have ideas for an improvement on these door stays ?
I replaced it a couple of years ago but it's failing again to hold the door open.

I would recommend this type, because the arm drops into a slot and does not rely on friction.

Does it hold it open normally and just an issue when windy? If so then we have a strap loop which is set inside a locker with about an inch sticking out, it's near our door and we just use a strap round the inside hab door handle and hook it to the loop.

I have found the plastic door holding devices last 2-3 years before they break or wear out.

We have a loop of paracord.
One end looped around the door handle, the other end looped over the wing mirror.

It also doubles up as a small washing line.

The plastic door retainers last about a year if you visit hot places. The plastic seems to open up rather than wear out. For what it is worth, I would not like to have metal chicken pen catches that could scratch other surfaces on my van.
Depending on your door layout, you could use adjustable straps hooked on the front door handle. On a windy day very few if any plastic clips will hold your door back

I'm not really a fan of the bunge cord look, I like the stay suggested by nicholsong but the screw holes wouldn't line up and I'd end up with un-used holes covered with sikaflex.
So I gave your idea a try and I'll see how it works out.

Have you got a looker like this, we have a piece of string tied to the seat frame inside locker and then when needed open locker , get string (red line) and tie to open door internal handle.

I do have one of those but it's on the near side.
The hook of the bunge fits quite nicely in between the skirt and the locker allowing it to open unhindered.
There is a piece of ali there that feels quite substantial unlike the skirt which is a bit flimsey, so I think it'll be secure.
A bit of foam pipe insulation and a cable tie should prevent any scuffing.

One reason why I use a bungee and bit of strapping is that we only have a 'ram' on the top of the door to keep it open (no catch of any sort), it works okay but not as secure as even a plastic catch so we nearly had a squished dog when it's shut unexpectedly in a light wind. Although I could fit a catch with a long 'reach' I would be concerned that if a strong gust of wind caught the door it could pull out the fixings and damage the door and/or wall.

This makes me concerned for those who's catch doesn't hold where they've adapted it or replaced it for one that can't release at all, IMV you run the risk of damaging the door/wall if the door does 'break free' which could be a very expensive mistake.
 
We always use a bungee if windy. Learned the hard way on our last van when the door blew shut when the fly screen was closed. Spent the next three hours fixing it, but fortunately there was no major damage.
 
Why don’t manufacturers come up with a proper solution.
On my first van the window behind the drivers seat wasnt a slider so when you opened the door it hit the window when it was open.
In our new van if the door closes in the wind and the fly screen is closed it smashes into the fly screen.
Dont manufacturers test there ideas?
 
I have this type on my Lunar caravan. It latches positively, so requires the trigger to be operated to release. No way is it ever going to release accidently.

Plus one for a gas strut , put on in the toilet door too to stop it folding back on the hinges😉

Has anyone done this ? Where did you source the part? Does the door open beyond 90 degrees ?

I think this could be an elegant solution. Our side hinged garage doors have gas struts but not the hab door.

The solution.
A 2 meter paracord loop.
Looped between door and wing mirror

The art is getting the length exactly right, so that its long enough to slip easily over the wing mirror and door,
but not too long to be baggy and mean the door bangs in the wind.
Hence double figure of 8 knots on bights so that the length was adjustable until I got it perfect.

This design would work even on a 8m van with the door at the back, as paracord does not stretch or break.
I think elasticated bungees are dangerous for this purpose, as in a high wind with a banging door they can come unhooked and whip back hitting people or paintwork

The paracord solution also doubles up as a washing line

Yes they can be retrofitted and open beyond 90 degrees, done mine by myself . Brackets and struts etc available here where I got mine , can be adjusted for tension also to suit the application you need them for .Used on my Autotrail Apache hab door and bathroom door , sold now got a PVC 😉

If the door opens and covers the fridge vents, might that not cause issues with the fridge?
