Good afternoon Funsters. We are planning to visit the Italian lakes this September and looking at our route, the Gotthard tunnel/pass are the 'logical' way to go. Having looked at a few YouTube videos of the pass, it doesn't look too bad. Have any Funsters experience of going over rather than through? Looking at the Gotthard traffic site today there were delays of 1.5+ hours just to get to the tunnel, not my idea of Fun!

I have ridden over most Alpine passes by motorcycle including the St Gottard. It will be perfectly doable in a van and far more scenic especially on the Italian side.

You will have a zigzag climb up to Andermatt. It is worth spending a bit of time there if only a drive around - very picturesque.

The climb up from Andermatt and over the top is fairly standard fare.

No way I would want to endure the tunnel. I have been stuck in the tailback on the Italian side having to thread my way through miles of stationary traffic when on the bike.
