just come through Austria from the German border, make sure you keep on the motorway and stopped at the main service area where you purchase the go box. €5 for the box and minimum charge is €75 for toll fees. Going to italy via Innsbruck and south of Innsbruck box started to beep twice (normal is once when going under gantry) stopped at next station and box checked and had €30 left on it but tried to tell me needed to add another €75 (minimum allowed) said no thanks. Got to italian border ok. Then you have to send your log book and proof of Euro 5 for emissions. Showed at time of purchasing box but you have to send to a designated office. Took pictures on iPad and sent by email after two days confirmation back that documents ok. Now have a go box which will not be used again as won’t bother with Austria, good job i carry original letter of conformity which shows euro 5. Hope this helps anyone thinking of going through austria.

Thanks @Ianj55, we set off in a few weeks, At one time you could get the go box sent to you, but because of Brexit, (it is EU citizens only) and we are still in state of flux we have to get as soon as over the border. looking forward to the Trip but not getting the go-box. we have a certificate of conformity from Fiat so hope that is enough.

I plan to just avoid motorways as I did last year, no problems so far and were 3.9 tonne.
Go box just seems too much hassle.
I guess winter may be difficult if non motorway roads closed due to snow ?
Hopefully most open now though.

We have had a go box for about 5 years.. But we never go on motorways and it has never beeped .. Should think the battery is flat now !

Problem is if there is a diversion & you are directed on to the motorway it is an instant fine.

I don't think it's just motorways, I believe it also applies to the 'Superstradas', which I think are fast dual carriageways. My advice is to get the box, it's very easy to get caught out.

When we last used a Go-Box, we were able to hand it in at the border post having passed over the Brenner autobahn. We received an instant refund.

The reason we have still got ours is cos no bugger would take it off us !!!

If you go on the Brenner pass with the go box you just drive straight through the go box lane, no need to que. If visiting would suggest a go box no matter which roads as the police are everywhere. Its sending the paperwork in that is a nuisance as you are given a date on the paperwork which you have to abide by.

We’re off to Austria a couple of times this year but we are 3500kg, I just wanted to say in the past I have been diverted onto the motorway a couple of times near Innsbruck although I was on the Harley at the time but it can and does happen, also I have seen cops on the motorway exit roundabouts looking at vignettes!!

It isnt as easy as that, you also have to prove your emission class.

I ve been avoiding the motorways for years and havent been caught out yet.

Do you get a refund for balance of the €75?

Think yourself lucky if you get through for €75 and they do not want to know about a refund. My advice would be to avoid Austria if you can !!

We may well do, but we have an invitation to go down to our German friends’ holiday home in the south of Austria this summer and after a short visit with the school I teach in last year, I think Austria has a lot going for it.
If I know I have to budget extra for doing so, then I will.
But the question was asked in good faith .. are you saying you can’t get a refund of the unused portion? (y)

Article in MMM, well a readers letter saying nearly all roads are toll even single carriageways. Think they want to keep austria for themselves. Have a mate with a go box, pity tyey are number plate recognition. ;)

Things may have changed, but we received a full refund of the unused credit without any argument.
