Globecar Summit Prime

Minxy, is the Minxipedia to do with Globecar models or with SMC Newark? I'm interested in possibly getting a Globecar Summit at some stage and going on whats been posted here SMC Newark is an option?
I suppose a bit of both, we've had 2 Globecars, the first one a Familyscout L was from SMC and the second a Campscout was from JC Leisure (they don't do them now), so I know a fair bit about those models having fettled them and got to know their intricacies. I think the Summits were originally the 'H' line models whereas the Familyscout, Campscout and Roadscout are 'D' line ones with different finishes and possibly of a different quality as there was some comments about this on other threads, eg this one:

I found the SMC brothers to be arrogant and ignorant a lot of the time, one was a lot worse than the other, our experience of them wasn't great nor the treatment we received generally, the only caveat is that the last lot of real dealings we had with them was back in 2018 just before we change to the Campsout so they may have improved since then.

We've been van hunting today and decided that the Globecar Summit Prine 640 fit the bill perfectly. One feature that clinched it was the sky roof. I'm now rethinking. I've seen a late 2020 automatic for sale which I plan to view this week. How can I tell whether the van has had the modification to solve the roof issue? If I purchase a more recent one, how can I tell if it has the new design of roof? My German isn't good enough to translate the Possle forum notes on this.

Hi - we have a 2021 540 summit prime and have had the sky roof modification fitted by Highbridge and have had no problems at all. The modification basically adds three additional securing points to the roof. I can send some pics if this would help. I think the new vans have something similar albeit the additional points are bolted through the roof rather than stuck on as is done with the modification.

A picture would be really helpful, thank you. The van I'm planning to view is at a dealer who say they sold it originally, so they SHOULD know its modification history, but I wouldn't want to rely on that.

Hope this helps - a new catch on each side with a new recess bar to hold each latch and one in the top middle

Thanks very much. I have an Adria coachbuilt with a large overcab roof window. It has 4 locking points not dissimilar to those you've had fitted, although they have a "vent" position option. It's never rattled or leaked. If it's not been modified, I will definitely ask for it. It seems pretty obvious that it's not a "friday afternoon" problem, but a design fault.

Absolutely - the dealer should have a knowledge of this but if it hasn’t been done yet the job itself only takes about 2 hours.

Good luck 👍

I assume it's this one ... Jimjo can you tell from the photos if its had the mod?

Hi Minxy - yes it looks to me as though it’s got the additional latches on both sides and the top. Hopefully that’s good news!
👍👍

Yes, that's the one. There's no close-up photos of the sky roof. I'll phone them tomorrow. I was planning on calling in on Thursday, as I'm travelling down that way to an event and it's not far off my route. Could be gone by then, I suppose.

Just to add to my previous comments - since having the Skyroof fixed with the extra catches it seems to be fine.

Ah, yes.I can see them on one of the photos. Your help is much appreciated! I'll still mention it to them, though. Just so that thry know that that I know.

Also, I'm confused by the fridge in the 2020 model. The pictures show the control panel above the fridge door, while others I've seen have it above the hab door with the other controls. It looks like the former significantly reduces the size of fridge. Seems odd.

Can only say that ours, albeit a 540 2021 model, has fridge controls above Hab door.

Looks like the earlier models had a smaller fridge.

Seems so. Could be a problem, as my current 6m Adria has a 189 litre fridge freezer. At first you think you'll never use all that space, but you can. I'm happy to go to a smaller fridge, but the one in that 2020 Globecar looks tiny.

Our 2021 640 has fridge controls over hab door. Our fridge also has one of those doors that opens both ways which is surprisingly useful when loading because you can put stuff in from outside the van. There are clearly changes between 2020 and 2021. The pull out cupblard in the 2020 is an opening door with two shelves in side in ours.
