Giacomo Agostini 80 today

Never met the chap but seen him at the Isle of Man & other circuits. He/we were at the IOM the year Derek Rutter shredded the back tyre on one blistering lap on the newly released Yamaha R1.

Saw Ago and Phil Read on the MVs at brands Hatch back in 1973. Great days. (y)

We hitchhiked down there as I’d previously written off my Suzuki T250J!

I remember him and Phil Read at various races in the seventies. Whilst stationed in Germany we managed to get to Spa in Belgium. That was always a great weekend. Normally we spent the days at the guesthouse on the hairpin above the start finish straight.

A true champion.
Total respect for all the riders of his era.

I can’t remember the other riders. My mates were bike fans and knew all the riders. I was the transport for there camping gear.
Spa always stuck in my memory because of the sound of the bikes coming down the mountain to the hairpin.
I hadn’t thought about Freddy Frith until we moved to Grimsby. His bike shop was still open when we came here in 82.

Cadwell Park, Lincolnshire (near where I was born) seemed to bring out the best in him……. (y)

Never saw Ago, but Phil Read did a demo lap of the TT on the MV one year we were there. There were some other famous names like George Meier the German ace and I want to say Stanley Woods too, but my memory might be playing tricks on me, but they weren't hanging around !

Agostini was a great motorcycle racer winning on 350cc and on 500cc machines ,and for 5years on the trott winning the world championship on both bikes. And also winning 10 IMO TT’s made him very special.
The only time I ever saw him ride was some parade laps at Oliver’s mount,as in his heyday I was just a baby.
RIP Ago

Whilst I think Agostini was indeed a very very good racer, he did benefit from far superior machinery for a lot of years. Racing in the 350/500 classes against Norton AJS singles etc on his 3/4 cylinder 350/500cc MV’s, he often lapped the other riders.
Honda mainly competed in the 125/250 classes with a 300 for the bigger classes. Ago’s career/success became much more difficult when Yamaha and Suzuki got going.

I saw him in a group in the paddock at Goodwood about 30 years ago ( when Goodwood was easy) seemed a very popular chap.
