Have read a few reports of hospitals in Europe not accepting the old EHIC card with the reasoning that as the UK is no longer part of the EU then it is no longer valid - whilst this is incorrect it may be wise to apply for a new GHIC card https://www.nhs.uk/using-the-nhs/he...-a-free-uk-global-health-insurance-card-ghic/ rather than rely on just the old EHIC ones. We have applied for GHIC now but will have it along with our EHIC (whilst it remains valid) as the GHIC cover is a little more limited as in which countries it applies to.
It's free, quick & easy to apply (just need NI number), lasts for 5 years & may save some hassle or maybe even some money :) If you are part of a married couple then applying for a second card for your spouse, when given the option, is even easier than doing two applications (y)

Some helpful info about these cards here https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/free-ehic-card/ apart from the bit that says we don't need GHIC if have EHIC as think that's now questionable but it also mentions some problems with EHIC in section 7.

Best to change before the old ehic has expired.
If you leave it till later getting a new one becomes a PITA

But am I right, you still have to have Travel insurance along side of this card, as it is is only for minor things but if you had a serious accident this card is non sensicle

The point of what? the GHIC? If so it means that if you go to a state Dr or hospital you will pay the same as locals. You will of course need travel insurance for things like repatriation.
