I was surprised and a little annoyed to find that the tap water I asked for with my glass of wine and a large beer was charged for.

A massive 3.90euros for one glass of tap water.

I challenged the Bill, but was told it was normal.

Googling when I got back to the van, I found that contrary to most countries where tap water is provided gratis, and often without asking, in Germany they very often refuse or charge for it.

More expensive than the excellent beer!!

The price does sound OTT but I see no problem with charging for it they're going to fetch it you expect a clean glass and jug probably ice etc . It's a bit like saying the whole meal is a rip off because you could cook it yourself cheaper. I would have said a couple of euros for a jug was a reasonable rate

In all my years in various parts of Germany, never been charged for water in a bar, hotel or restaurant...

Never knew anyone would charge for tap water when requested as part of other orders such as drinks / food.
I appreciate they’re a business but usually corkage as such / fetching and cleaning a glass is charged if you bring your own and they supply the glass and fetch.
I you was ordering 2 glasses of tap water alone in a bar I could sort of get it if they’re adding ice & a slice but as part of a larger order? They must be desperate. However, I was once told that a bar or restaurant couldn’t refuse serving a free glass of tap water because it could be needed if the person was on drugs. (Wouldn’t supreme if this rule only applies to England) (Kets say the South fir arguments sake 🤣🤣🎣🎣) Hence why water is on tap (get it 🤣) at these illegal raves to stop the druggies tripping too high. (Or so I’m told - not personal experience)😫
