On Friday we will be travelling from Dunkirk to Düsseldorf and I need to be involved in a WebEx for an hour. It would be really handy if I could stop at motorway services around lunchtime and log onto a WiFi.

Does anyone know if German motorway services routinely have public WiFi ?

I'm wandering Germany at present and can't be sure of any wi-fi on motorway services. My solution would be head for a Mc D and either go in for a coffee or sit outside and use their wi-fi. You will most likely find that it is a 'Telecom' router not as in the UK a Mc D branded one but it will still give you free access. If you are a BT Broadband customer then you can use a 'Telecom FON' access point using your BT email address and password. I'm on one at this moment via an 'iBoost' wi-fi extender.

We've just left Germany. We've spent over 3 weeks there and didn't find free wifi anywhere :(

If your "conference" is that important you may well be better off investing in a mifi and a "3" data-sim. Then you've got it for the future.
I always check to see if there's free WiFi about but I can't ever recall finding any in Germany. MiiFi works fine though.

I came back from Dortmund five weeks ago and none of the sevices I used had WiFi (y)(y)

Pretty sure Tank & Rast service stations don't offer wifi.

I weekly have this challenge and typically use McD's, free wifi in all across DE.

As suggested just get a data SIM. I suggest Vodafone on a monthly rolling contract. You will only need a GB at most for an hour of video.
I watched the England/Belgium game in Spain yesterday in the MH and it didn't buffer once - just ran smoothly as if we were at home.
Sadly the England team didn't work so well. :)

If you need it then don't trust on any free wi fi especially in Germany.
Either a Data contract or one of the three 12gb sims.
By the way, some people on here do have caravans.

Apart from managing to blag my way on to a Hotel's WiFi system once, I've never managed to find free WiFi, even with signal boosting equipment. :(

Cheers,

Jock. :)

McDonalds is your best bet for WiFi.

Don't rely on mobile data on any network, especially if it's a UK one roaming. Germany is quite a bit behind the rest of Europe in that regard.

Although we didn't find any free wifi anywhere our Huawei mifi with a 3 data card worked well everywhere. If a connection is crucial it will probably be best to provide your own. Can you tether to your phone data?

As it happened I was late and so happily managed it at Drongen services in Belgium, not perfect but just about good enough.

I was surprised at the lack of free WiFi in Germany and on the Austrian OBB AutoZug Nightjet train service.

Admittedly, it was a few years ago, but when enquiring about WiFi at a McDonalds in Germany, the manager requested my credit card, and at the end of my session he would debit the charge.
It must have been the look of shock horror on my face, because he then said to me, "This is not France. Our WiFi is not free here at McDonalds in Germany. :(

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Here in Germany Internet access leaves a lot to be desired.
Whether it is mobile coverage outside of towns, or free WiFi.

If you are in a town which has a tourist information office, many of them have free WiFi.
