Hi I am having real problems with my 1990 Fiat Ducato 290 gear selection it seems ok when I start driving from cold but once the engine warms up 1st. 2nd and 3rd become really difficult and I can only get 1st if I switch off the engine , I know the clutch is getting close to replacement but should I be looking for something else . Any advice would be really welcome

Try greasing/lubricating the gear selector ball joint where it goes into the gearbox.

Water collects in and rusts up the movement, it helped enormously on mine, hope it is an easy fix for you although access may be difficult.

If it's column change (LHD) there's no ball joint or complex linkage it goes directly onto the selector shaft. If it's OK when the engine is stopped but a problem when it is running it will be clutch drag.

Thank you I had a strong feeling it was clutch related will a replacement cure this ?

Yes. If gear selection is OK with the engine stopped then it is the clutch at fault.

Is that the same on a RHD floor or dash mounted gear change c.2000 year?
ie NOT column change.
Fiat Ducato 1.9td, 5 speed box.
Yes. If the clutch is dragging (not fully disengaging) then with the engine running the gearbox syncromesh and baulk rings will prevent the gears engaging. Reverse is different in that it doesn't have synchromesh so attempts to engage it (with a dragging clutch) will be noisy.

Thank you for that.
Still think I may have a gearbox problem on gears 2 and 3 when engine running ( crunching) and occasionally into 1 when stationary, but new clutch was recently fitted so maybe needs further adjustment?
Will investigate in due course and report back.
