Gear knob on fiat Ducato

While we were playing avoid the closed roads in Somerset on Monday the gear knob in our hymer on a fiat ducato chassis came off in my husbands hand. He removed the spring and we carefully drove back to Bournemouth. I got a new knob but it’s very tight to fit and hubby is a bit scared of banging it too hard although it looks like the same one. Any body done this.?

Yes, the same happened with me a couple of years ago, I used a rubber faced mallet and gently tapped it home.
