Hi just had one 11kg bottle fitted , installer told me it doesn't matter if valve is open or closed for filling is this right. thanks.

From the Gaslow website FAQ's....

If you read the Gaslow instructions they say turn off before filling as indicated above, however I have a"Gas it" fixed tank underneath the camper and no way of turning to off unless I crawl underneath, they don't say anything about turning off so I guess they think the automatic 80% turn off is good enough.

On my van, with an older Gaslow system, fills OK with the valve closed. The gas comed in through the charging point via a flexible hose to the tank. I understand there is a built in non return valve. The supply to your van comes off a different fitting with a valve on the tank, this valve needs to be open to supply the van.

Yes, if you are talking about the turn-off valve on top of the bottle, because the filling point is separate but I always close mine, just incase of excess pressure from pump.

You can fill without turning off the main valve. The filler uses a separate valve so it matters little to the filling process.
It is wise to turn the main valve off, however, as a precaution against excess pressure damaging the diaphragm in your regulator.
I'm sure that many forget, yet I've heard little about damaging consequences. That could be because the damage done does not become apparent until much later...

If its your first fill I was recommend to partial fill on the first fill to allow the 80 % shutoff to settle down.
Or at leadt don't rely on the fill shut off first time.

When I mentioned this to somebody the other day, I got shot down in flames by all n sundry.
Needless to say, I’m with you. 👍

Gaslow’s technical manager told me to always turn off the gas bottle valves when refilling.

The reason for this is that a faulty filler pump (too high pressure) could damage the regulator.

Agree with the above, plus its safer to fill with the valve closed.

Having spent years in the oil industry I see the potential failure of the over filling cut-off and liquid gas getting onto the system, so to be safe I turn it off. Each to their own.

After damaging the regulator by leaving the bottles open when refilling, I now close the valve. It could be the regulator was on its way out anyway as it was nearly 10 years old but I suspect the added pressure from the refilling did it no extra favours!

Inlet pressure rating on a Truma bulkhead regulator is 230psi pump filling pressure is around 140 psi but it can vary.
With the regulator on my van costing 200 quid I won't risk it I always turn off the bottles.

Sorry, but if you been told it does not matter by an approved fitter - get another approved fitter to test the installation....
