We have 2 Alugas bottles in our van, I think 11 litre each ?

Anyway gas bottles are sold by weight, KGs usually but gas is sold in litres. I was trying to work out the cost of equivalent Calor vs LPG. The local LPG up here is 92.9p per litre and wondered is we are still saving by using LPG.

can someone enlighten me on litres vs kilos ?

We needed to replace our Calor 13kg and could only find it at a Shell garage. They charged us £45 for the exchange. Had we had refillable at your prices that would have been £24 so just over half price.

Had a shock today when I walked into a Shell garage. The 13KG Calor were £48.50. 😳

Mid winter I reckon we would use that in 4 days.

Over £12 a day for gas! Hookup at £5 is starting to look a bargain.

Glad I have refillable, cost me £37 for 22KG the other day.

Asda are charging about .60p a litre. A 13 kg bottle holds about 22 litres. That would be about £14 to fill it.

Having travelled all over Europe, it's worth every penny for convenience, these days we only have one Gas it we left one on our previous motorhome, simply because in Spain where we live large bottles of propane are about €14, but once out of Spain is the same as the UK and you Calor bottle runs out, I would like a pound for every Calor gas bottle I've seen dumped and people have been forced to seek a local bottle, we are in France at the minute been away from home since 4th June and have refilled in the UK and now using the last of our Spanish bottle, so I can change it when we get home, without a refillable we would have run out a while ago. 😁 Bob

93p!!!!
I'm afraid that is a rip off!

Average for the UK is 67p
Down south we usually pay under 60p

Local to you in Cromarty is Beauly Holiday Park who are charging 65p

Asda Kirkcaldy 52.7p per litre today, so roughly £1.054 per kg. Late June Bottle exchange was £26.75 for 6kg, so almost £4.50 per kg, and I suspect that price now looks a bargain.

Can I ask what you were running on gas for the 5 days? I ask because I am full timing and have only used 16 ltrs since May, but I'm only using gas for cooking, everything else is powered by EHU.

In autumn/spring one 11kg GasLow bottle will last over a week if we don't have EHU.
(We do have solar)

That would be running cooking, water heating and a bit of internal heating.

At fifty-something pee per litre when bought at a fuel station we typically have change from £7 for a tank full.
(Calor was £27 for the same amount!!!!)

We have recouped the initial cost of installation of our Gaslow system numerous times over the years, even when the other week deciding to deliberately go somewhere relatively local via Corley services on the M6 rather than 'the pretty way' to refill it.

Hadn't realised how much LPG had risen.
Not filled-up since before Covid and am sure it was less than 50p/l then.

I know we will never save enough on refills to pay for the refillable system but the convenience of not having to take bottles in and out is worth it to me.

Martin probably thinks it was worth it to save me moaning about having to hand back gas I had paid for in the exchange bottles. lol

My back of envelope calculation was it takes about 6 months of non EHU camping to recoup the installation cost.

If you:
  • Intend to keep your van for at least 5 years
  • Travel for more than 2 weeks outside the UK
  • Don't like tales of swapping Calor cylinders on a dark and stormy night
  • Object to paying £2.50 per litre of Calor LPG when it's at the pumps for 60p at the same location.
  • Do the occasional week (or more) not connected to EHU
Then I'd seriously consider fitting a GasLow (or Similar) refillable LPG bottle or tank

All the above ignores the cost of convenience of just filling with LPG or the potential added cost of buying bottles in Spain and France and Italy etc due to the lack of compatibility of gas connectors across Europe.

LPG seems to have shot up everywhere recently. I'm guessing Calor Gas will be even more of a rip off now than it normally is.

I don’t believe Calor is anything but profiteering. It might have gone up in price but a few years back it was £20 cheaper for a paltry 11KG.

We don't do a lot of non EHU camping as Martin uses medical equipment - we can go 3 nights without EHU and no recharge (if the solar not working due to bad weather) which is why I said we were unlikely to recoup the cost. We also carry a spare battery (in a proper box) for emergency use and to use an electric pump to inflate / deflate the kayaks.

At the moment we don't go very far (elderly parents) but having the van is a Godsend as when we are at my parents we have our own space to retreat to.

Also remember it is possible to take the refillable cylinders from one van to another :)

I'd forgotten about having to change cylinders in the dark and the rain :) or if you have a single cylinder trying to find somewhere to swap the cylinder in a strange place late on a Sunday night for example lol.

The refillable system and the alarm were the first things we had fitted to our new van (it already had solar panel).

This year we've had 8 days off grid around Aberdeenshire, 9 days travelling around NC500, and now doing 7 days on Skye all off grid.
Use about 1 tank full each trip, so we'll worth it even paying 93ppl for lpg

we are intending going to lincoln on friday does any body have any wild camping places near the show ground tia

sorry posted this in the wrong bit
