We’ve just returned from a week away in our Motorhome. Had to change the gas bottle which leaked(strong smell of propane outside the van) and emptied. Bought another one which lasted less than a day! Anyone help with the issue please?

If it's emptying that quick surely you can hear it hissing or are we talking a small camping Gaz thing?

if your not confident then look up for a mobile caravan company repairer
But its easey to follow the gas pipes and spray any joints you cant do any harm unlees your smoking at the same time

To isolate the leak turn off the gas cocks serving the motorhome. If you still have a leak suspect the regulator or it's connection to the gas bottle.

Seriously get it checked out, that is very dangerous.

The LPG is heavier than air and if it is leaking it can get into something like a drain and sit there until something lights it up, this happened in Spain many years ago.

If it is the normal large gas cylinder, it will have a stop valve on the top.
Turn this off until checked by someone competent with gas.

As others have said it's not a bottle issue as if the bottle was faulty it would have emptied in storage before you bought it there's a leak somewhere in your gas system. I think the most likely cause is either it was never screwed on properly or the hose to the cylinder is old and has a split in it. You need someone to look at it before connect another cylinder at the moment it's like living in a house where youve left all the gas taps on the cooker on.........dodgy in the extreme!

From what we have read we don't know what size bottle she is talking about, but she could have in fact been sold an empty bottle, but from experience if it's a proper calor bottle emptying it could be following the ground for 10s of yards and be lit from that distance, she hasn't been back , hope she hasn't blown herself up.

Sorry she has in fact been back reading the thread 20 minutes ago so she is still ok (y)

Edit just read my post again, I didn't mean I'm sorry she's ok

It’s a serious leak and an even more serious safety problem, get it sorted or let us know the burns ward details so we can send flowers.

Could be a split pigtail hose, or worse still, a leak in the van 💥

Good luck getting it sorted asap 👍🏻

As I said in another post she has been back reading the thread but for some reason hasn't posted anything.
So at least she is ok.

Great motorhome but was not worth £40K in 2014, looks like a B544 to me.

Thank you for the replies. Just to reassure you we haven’t blown ourselves up. We now think the issue is a missing O ring from the union on the hose.

Post a picture up if possible.
I was actually sent a new pigtail from a Leisure business the other day as I wanted to prove that they were selling incorrect pigtails to their customers, it was not only incorrect but also missing the washer from the W20 regulator connection.

I had a similar scenario turned out to be the bottle connection wasn't seating properly. Gave it a serious clean no problems since.
I've brought a gas sniffer and use it every time I change a bottle and also check any accessible joints. Use to be safe.

Thank you that’s a great tip

Just my opinion of course, we're all free to do as we wish. But using gas bottles always seemed fraught with the possibility of leaks through worn or insecure connections. To me rechargeable is the only way to go, no humping heavy bottles around, never having to "waste" unused gas when changing and lastly no disturbing of connections.
